Hi guys just wanted to know if its danderous for my level to be 8.6 it shows that on my red sea tesk kit. I was advised by bertoni that I try and check another tst kit as red sea is not very good or acurate. but I would still like to know whether 8.6 is too high or dangerous?

If you check your tank before the lights come on and when they go out, you will see a difference of .5 or more in some tanks. This is pretty normal and not worth getting to excited about.
Most readings above 8.6 are bogus unless there has been something added to the tank (kalk or other strong base)
Take a sample to your LFS (tupperware container with no air in it) Air left in the container "can" change the ph

Also, I was reading a thread on another board by a guy with a pH of 8.6. The poster found out that his general test kit directions said to read the tests under a cool white florescent bulb. Like a lot of reefers he was reading it by the overhead incandescent lights by his tank. When read by the specified source his pH was 8.1. This also made a difference in his NH4 .25 -> 0.

I have to agree with the others as well. Most tanks never get that high. And if they are typically it is a testing error. Most tanks have a problem with low ph not high.
I would buy a monitor and dump the test kits. Monitors are more accurate but I have seen 3 or 4 people trying to reduce what they thought was high ph, but they recalibrated there monitors and lo and behold the ph was just fine. One of those folks was me.
I would not however let the ph go above 8.5. Above that the the critters will start to suffer.

If my tank were at 8.6, I'd work on lowering the pH, but not do anything drastic. 8.7 and 8.8 call for some work, IMO. This article talks about high pH problems:
