pH Calibration Solutions

Where can I pick up some calibration solutions locally? I was just screwing around with my pH monitor and accidently recalibrated it with my tank water

Also, what calibration solutions do you all use? Mine has a 2-point calibration and the default was set for pH 4.0 and pH 7.0, but I can change the settings to calibrate with a pH 10.0.

Jack, if you can't find any for a reasonalbe price then you know I have some that I don't mind lending you from time to time. The stuff sold at the critter isn't very good and is over priced. You want to make sure to buy some that the pH isn't a strong function of temperature. My stuff is lab grade from www.fishersci.com and it is calibrated for 25.0 C. At 22.0 C it is about +_ .05 off. The cheaper stuff is much worse. Of course, the other alternative is to just make sure you always calibrate at 25 C.

They just had the pinpoint packets. Thanks for the link. That lab grade stuff sounds like the way to go. I got two packets just to get me back on my feet.

I would use the 4.0 and 7.0.

I was told by the techs at Hach that the 10.0 reacts with CO2 in the air very quickly and the 4.0 and 7.0 are much more stabile.

Thanks. Dude, are you back in town? It has been a while since you posted. If I recall correctly you were going off to Iraq or something like that. Hope your tanks are doing okay :)

Jack, If you are ever concerened with the validity your pH calibration buffers, I can check them in my lab. The pH meter in the lab is calibrated every morning and is far superior to anything we have at home.

So Chris, I got something to get me back on my feet but now want to order some pH 4 and 7 solutions for future use. Which ones from fishersci should I order?

Any of the lab grade ones should be fine, but I have always used the "Fisher" brand 4 and 7. They seem to have good specs as far as temp dependency and have a very long shelf life. I think they are around $15 each (for 500 mL) and will last you and friends a lifetime.

Thanks,

Yes, I'm at Ft. Hood, Texas right now training and I'll be leaving for Iraq in August.

The wife and kids took over my tanks and all seems to be well.

I don't have anything hard to take care of. I have a "Darwin" tank.

You know, survival of the fittest. I have mostly softies in my reef and then an aggressive FO.

But again, thanks for the concern, it helps to know people are thinking of you now and then.

Take care.
