PH controller to automate dosing additives??

I am starting to use the ESV 2 part to stabilize my 285 gallon tank.

I have a PH controller that will allow me to dose when the PH gets too low, I was going to dose the Alk portion when the PH fell below a certain threshold.



is this common or is using timers the standard?

You don't dose Alk based on ph. You dose Alk based on how much Alk is used up by your tank.

+1, that would be a very bad idea. Alkalinity is MUCH more important then pH in a saltwater system. Unless your pH falls below 7.8 or above 8.3 I wouldn't consider doing anything about it.
