PH probe problems?

I have my probe near my heater is that a problem.... My probe reads 8.12 and then my water top off kicks on and the Ph drops to like 7.23 or so... and then it takes 3 to 4 hours for it to read normal again...I know my top off water is about 6.10, but should it take that long to go back.
