PH Probe question

How long do PH probes last? I thought I remember seeing they last about 12 to 18 months but I cant find the thread to confirm this.

We receive this question a lot.

It all depends on the following

1. How you look after it (maintain it)
2. The enviroment it is in.

If all the above are equal then yes you should get 12-18months, but there is no golden figure these are just estimates.

pH probes are degenerative, the moment you start using one its life starts shrinking, it is then up to the owner to maintain the probe to increase the life as much as possible in respect to the enviormant it is in.

Thanks. Does that include the Temp probe also? I would assume the actual probe would need to be cleaned for any buildup just like the PH probe, but does it degrade also?

The temp probes are pretty much bullet proof as long as you dont drop them! Just clean thats all.

Ok here is a list of what to do with what probes

pH - Clean weekly - calibrate bi weekly, never allow to dry out- life - as discussed above

Redox - as above, clean in recommended Redox cleaning solution - life - same as pH

Conductivity - clean and calibrate weekly, can be cleaned in same solution as redox, a tarnished element as with Redox leads to wrong readings - Life indefinate but not guarranteed

Temperature - clean weekly life as with conductivity

Hi there,
wow - thats news to me that the pH probes "wear out". You mentioned that you need to maintain em - what do i need to do!?!?!

Ta lots,
Bob

Yes pH probes are degenerative.

As time goes by the the reference solution inside the probe (KCL gel) becomes more fluid as it slowly becomes contaminated with the water that it sits in. This breaks down the ability for the probe to reference correctly.

To maintain the probe, you can purchase pH probe cleaner but in all honesty and gentle scrub in fresh water around the reference junction plate and bulb is enough, then recalibrate.

You can not stop a pH probe from ageing but by keeping it clean the junction does not block up so quickly which is part of keeping the probes life as long as possible
