PH spike at night

My PH spikes from 8.15 during the day to 8.4 at night when my refuge light comes on. Is this to much of a fluctiuation?

Yes, that's pretty significant. Are you closing up the house during the day and opening it up an night? (In this hot weather, I know I am!) Could be an O2 issue, if so. It's easy to test to see if that's the issue with the pH aeration test.

Lately my pH has been going up at night, too, but my swing is only about .05, 8.25 day to 8.3 night. If I leave the windows open during the day, I see 8.3 during the day, too. My pH is still climbing as the tank settles in to it's new configuration, so I see it creeping up a bit each day. 8.4 is a good level.

I've noticed a greater pH depression and swing during the day also, especially since we have more people staying at the house lately and the windows shut running the AC. Once the windows open up and the breezes flow in, the pH goes up close to 8.4 from a low of 8.2

What is the photoperiod of your tank? If heat isn't an issue you can try to run your lights earlier in the day to dampen the pH swing.

If you run your Fuge 24/7 what does that do for your PH???

Helps keep it stable. Once the main display lights go out, the fuge lights purpose of running 24/7 is to stabilize PH from shifting/spiking to much at night.

i was running 24/7 and ph on AC Jr. was going from 8.17 at night to 8.40 during halides......switched to opposite and now ph only goes from 8.28 to 8.40

I agree, running the fuge lighting on a reverse photoperiod will help lessen the tank's ph swing.
IME , running the fuge lighting 24/7 has less of an effect on preventing the pH swing....though the tank's pH will run a little higher overall.

yeah, i've been expecting a slowly lowering ph but that hasn't come yet...just less of a swing and actually the low point is higher:strange:

but i did just do this 3 days ago after almost 2 years of 24/7....but i didn't get a reliable ph meter until recently
