PH test kit?

There are no pH titration kits in this hobby; it is mostly a lab thing. In labs for seawater they use one indicator only for pH titration, Metacresol Purple. There are two companies in our hobby that sell a pH kit using MP; Instant Oceans, Aka, FasTest/SeaTest and Kordon's seawater kit. These are the best kits and most accurate there are, having the least "salt effect error" and the best color discrimination, where you can actually split the 8.2 -8.4 to get 8.3

RED

Yes, some kits use Phenol Red as an indicator which gives shades of Red :)

Yes, testing pH isn't absolutely necessary if you're taking care of Alk

That is a common error ;) CO2 could care less what the Alk is. If CO2 enters or leaves the system it makes no difference what that Alk is the pH will either dorp or rise

Let's have a party at your house where the pH is 8.2 and the Alk 4 Meq / l and watch the pH drop like a rock into the mid 7's :)

Now I look tarded :( I swear the original post was asking about dosing, and getting it dialed in. :D

Thanks Boomer. I knew someone would make a comment about that. I should have addressed more fully... I was assuming proper CO2 ventillation to be a given. It's true that many reefs can have a CO2 issue, and pH testing at different times of day would be a great idea. :)

For this reason, we upgraded our building's HVAC circulation system to bring in 10% fresh filtered air from outside, just for the tanks. We can have that party Boomer. ;) You're invited.:D

What the heck, you just changed your entire post including the title, and now my response makes no sense.

Umm, to answer your new question get an electronic pH meter.
 That's funny. When I do that I write it off to senior moments. Where do you dose your vodka by the way? :)

I really like the amercian Marine pinpoint monitor for ph moniroing.

Is this a consequence of alcohol inadvertently dumped in the tank at such a party? lol

HAHA! In graveyard's defense he is right. My original question was about getting my 2 part dosing correct then after I posted I went to the 2 part manufacturer's site and there it all was right in front of me. So I hurried up and edited the post to my second question about PH test kit because no one had answered my forst question yet. Next thing you know graveyard posts a reply to the first question so he must have been typing when I changed it. LOL!! Not sure why he didn't edit his post though?? :crazy1:

graveyardwork is NOT LOSING HIS MIND!!

I couldve edited it but it was more fun to leave it. Plus I had worked really hard at crafting it. Its all good. :)

Just for the record YES I am losing my mind, and I am the worm not work. I hate work. :D

Ohh I just noticed you are from SE SD. Headed out to Sturgis next year. It would be cool to check out some LFS while there and maybe some tanks.

Nice idea. I could arrange a few awesome tanks on your way through. Mine is in it's infant stages so it's not really worth looking at but there are a few TOTM in Sioux Falls. Well worth stopping by.

BTW: I know you're the worm...I was just typing too fast.

I know I have checked my pH and it would be the same and check my Alk and sometimes its different. So how could that be? Meaning 1 day I'll check my pH and Alk and they would be for example 8.2 and 9dKh. Then 1 day check again and get 8.2 and 11dKh. Anybody know why this is?

There are factors other than Alk that help determine what the pH will be. CO2 can drive pH down, and a lack of CO2 can bring it up. At night the corals and algae release CO2 into the water, and during the day they use CO2 causing the pH to fluctuate. Read back a few posts ( page 1 ), there is more info on pH swings.
