Ph test strips or probe

I have a RK I controller that is unable to monitor Ph. What would be better, using the salifert test strips or purchasing a Ph monitor/pen?

A pH probe is the way to go. Even cheap ones are more accurate than test strips and you can get calibrating solutions to check your results.

Thanks WK. Are there good and bad probes? What about the pen type probes? I understand from my research that 2 point calibration is better than 1. Is that true and a thing I should look for?

The "pH pens" by Hanna instruments and the Pinpoint pH meter series are widely used in the hobby. They also have replaceable electrodes. The Hanna's are under $75 while the Pinpoint is around $100.

A cheaper starter meter is the Extech pH pen. It is less than $40 but does not allow electrode replacement so eventually it will wear out.

You are always best using a two point calibration and for measuring a reef tank one uses pH 7 & 10 buffers to bracket the SW range. You must always use a pH 7 buffer as it sets the meter's isopotential point that is needed to allow automatic temperature compensation with other buffers.

Response time will get real slow and eventually it will be impossible to calibrate it. Often a soak in vinegar, then a half strength bleach solution can help a sluggish electrode but over time the special glass used in the sensor is depleted and the electrode fails.
