Philippine Reef Build

WDLV

Skunk Hybrid Freak
I'm pleased to have the opportunity to present my Philippine reef project on Earth Day. A day where we are all (hopefully) thinking about sustainability.

The objective of this new 180 gallon display system is to outline a captive version of what a decimated Philippine reef can become. Those of you who know me, know me as an avid collector of clownfishes; particularly skunk hybrids.

This system's focus is two fold. One is to provide as region-specific an environment as possible. The other is to bring attention to one of the most decimated reef systems in the world and show what aquaculture and sustainable practices could do for such a reef system. Obviously, I cannot provide large predatory species or even small predators in a community display but I do hope that over time I can show the general progression that would take place on Philippine reefs if aquaculture and sustainable practices are implemented.

The system as it appears now is in a similar state to the most decimated reefs of that region. There is some solid structure existing as well as a lot of dead coral rubble.

The materials used in this system were bought used from other reefkeepers, reused from my previous systems, recycled (in the case of baserock) or hand fabricated ("aragocrete") wherever possible. As new electro-mechanical components are required, I will replace them with more environmentally friendly alternatives.

Little closer.

Closer still.

Early inhabitants.

A couple of the centerpiece species.

My favorite view on any tank.

Fish Room.

Very nice! I am definitely going to be following this.

What is your stocking and re-intruction schedule going to be?

Thanks!

Well nothing else will be added for a while. Cycling needs to occur... and everything that was quarantined thus far has been added to the system.

Current stock list is:
1 A. thiellei

1 A. ocellaris misbar (similar to thiellei markings)

1 sailfin tang

1 coral beauty angel

2 fire shrimps

Seed rock consisting of a 10 gallon aquarium's fill of live branch rock (this was quarantined for 90+ days)

also I like the clowns, Im a fan of misbars myself... even tho they are easier to get, I believe they are just as unique as picasos, fancy whites, snowflakes, etc etc....

haha...to be honest. I think a flame would stand out nicely in that tank,,,, great build, I read thru both threads. good to see ya tryin to actually represent something. that's a lil outside the box there. generally its just to be a hobby and no actual theme, but you are actually tryin to represent how those reefs could respond if aquaculture was used more to let those areas rebound...

Thanks for the recognition. Always liked biotopes but this is my first regional tank.

gotta be honest. as im sitting here thinking, if you can get this tank to really thrive and document the "reef" growth in your tank over time to illustrate how those reefs could possible rebound in the same way, this easily could be a sticky over time...

Not really my goal. I just want people to think about it more than they do.

also how did you get the DIY rock to cure so quick?
It sat for some time curing before I even added water. I did several rinses as well. I also used Type III White Portland Cement, which has a slightly lower pH to begin with. It was extremely difficult to find in my area even though I can practically spit on the Lehigh Cement Company.

might not be your goal, but the potential is there.....

I made some rock once upon a time, and had to use Type II grey Portland...pffff never made it to the tank,,, it kept leaching grey scum for monthsssss, so I abounded ship on the one...

i admire your dedication to replicate that type of reef. I commend you.
Thanks! I'm surprised more don't.

Enjoyed hte build thread adn will enjoy this one too :)
I'm glad others are getting something out of it as well! Thanks!

I've done the grey type III. That was fine. Just unsightly for a while.

I debated long about this and I'm definitely going to add aragonite to this system. It will blow away I certain areas... but that's where the bottom comes in. I put in a small amount this weekend but I'm gonna add a little more from time to time. More for looks than anything else. I have a feeli g that different grades will collect in different areas from the pumps.
Speaking of which, the flow is throttled back on the return (Reeflo Dart) and it has a nice flow that barely disrupts the surface but moves the rest enough that I should get good polyp extension.
The CL is only on when I turn it on at the moment. I need to add a timer. I'm thinking there will be a storm every day around 3 PM.

I'm thinking I will time it so that two of the MH go out just before the storm and also connect some yellow lights into the CL circuit to help simulate storm conditions.
