"Phil's 125 Semi-Aggressive Reef"

It's been 48 hours since the new addition, I'm not fully convinced this will work with the 2. Feeding time has no longer been fun time, as this is when I'm most concerned and nervous. Not that I'm going to get bit (I did hand feed Alcatraz this morning and them having poor eyesight I don't believe, it's not 20/20 but it's also not on the low end), but it seems to throw a different switch in him. I feed Alcatraz 1st then the newest about twice a day, both get same wether it's a piece of krill, shrimp, or clam.

If this is how it's gonna shake out, I'm glad to be learning and knowing now instead of down the road.

Royal Gramma

Royal Gramma

Decided to get 15 more pounds of live rock yesterday and when I did I picked up a Royal Gramma. He's in my 20 QT in the kitchen :fish1:
I feel good about a fish not escaping it now, plus the only light is room light.
I did notice he has moved from his original place.

Maybe try feeding each them at different spots? Mine knows exactly where I put the food in the tank and goes to it when he smells food in the water when I'm feeding the trigger.

Being both eels are young, always feeding one eel on one end of the tank, and always the other end for the other eel might get them to go to their respective side when they catch the scent. That might give each other a enough space at feeding time to avoid any incidents. My niger trigger learned to just move aside and wait for the next piece when the eel comes up top for one. The eel definitely never holds back when he grabs food and being in the wrong place at feeding time is the biggest risk he poses, no question about it.

I've been doing this from the start as I was concerned with territorial aggression more than anything, having husky's has taught me a lot. Alcatraz has had the same spot for over a week that I feed at and goes 1st, followed by the newbie at opposite side of tank. It had taken shelter over there between the front panel and clear pvc.

Both have decent appetites, Alcatraz is eating a medium to large piece of whatever is for dinner max twice a day, won't accept sometimes, takes out of end of straw or my fingertips. The newbie gets a smaller portion on the end of the straw twice a day whatever I feed him. No way I would attempt to hand feed like I have Alcatraz, he's never went for the straw in the almost 3 weeks that I've had him. Now the newbie has struck within 1 inch of the tip of the straw almost every time.

I'll have a update here in a bit.

Trust your instinct, know your tank, and understand the behavior of it's inhabitants.

Trust your instinct, know your tank, and understand the behavior of it's inhabitants.

The above says it all. You can do all the research you want, but when it comes down to it the best knowledge comes from someone that has/had the same interest as you. To all of those that have given input on this thread or to any other on here/other sites:

THANK YOU!!

Without further ado:

I'm sad to say but I made the decision to pull the newbie earlier. It's been a decision I was afraid was looming all day and I went with my instinct. I didn't like what I had seen a few times, there were no marks left as the newbie was in full view before transfer, but I did see a few chases, and some what I believe to be stalking behavior. I knew if this was best I had to make the 20 QT eel proof and I'm confident I did. Some of the hardest lessons are those learned the hard way.

There was a quick intervention right before the transfer, the behavior I witnessed reminded me of the PG13 rating of a video that had been posted a while back where someone added another eel and it quickly ate the SFE already in the tank. Alcatraz seemed to be slowly stalking the other eel, both eels are within a 1/4 of same length, but Alcatraz is much thicker now. I did not want to witness, wake up in the morning to, or come home to find a severely injured or dead eel.

The transfer couldn't had went smoother as I did it at feeding time. I feed Alcatraz, then put some food in my larger net and like I hoped the newbie went right in. It did eat the krill that I had used to bait once it was in the 20 and has settled in the lil castle decoration sticking it's head out. I will be doing 5 gallon water changes daily over the next few days (unless I should do more?) until I can return :thumbdown.

This hasn't been an easy decision to make at all because if I had it my way I wouldn't be making this post. I thought about removing Alcatraz but was afraid of what progress may have been broken as a result, as I feel we've bonded in a way.

But I have no control on the inhabitants in my tank, what they think, or how they act. All I can do is learn the behavior and be 1 with my tank and the inhabitants that call home within.

Eels and Anemones

Eels and Anemones

I now know what I wanted to do originally do isn't going to work, so it's time to ask about the next option that's been in the back of my mind.

I'm not worried about a pair of clowns becoming a tasty treat to Alcatraz, it's what people like to keep with clowns is the question:

Can an anemone and eel peacefully coexist?

I'm nowhere near ready for 1 (next may at the soonest), just in the earlier stages of stocking and trying to keep a happy peaceful, stress free tank.

Somebody decided to make an appearance, all it took was a lil frozen squid.

At the start I was planning on doing an aggressive theme but that has changed. Alcatraz my chainlink has been in the DT for 4 weeks now with 2 skunk cleaner shrimp, snails, and hermits. I currently have a royal gramma, purple fire fish and a geometric hawk in QT for a week and a half (fire fish and hawk were trades for other attempted chainlink) doing well and eating (minimum 2 1/2 weeks till I'll even think about transferring).

Must have characteristics:
Active
Personality

I'm starting to think ahead of what enters QT next after that trio comes out and was looking for ideas so I can research and have a better understanding of that species and it's habits/tendencies before I bring it home.

Some type of relatively smaller bristletooth tang would be worth a thought. My kole tang is extremely active, always interacting with the other fish (including the eel when he's out) and that single lone tang has done an amazing job at keeping the rocks clean. I added mine well into the "new tank" algae blooms and within a week or so of being in my DT he made a huge impact and has kept things pretty clean ever since. I was never a big tang person but I've grown quite fond of this guy as he's always entertaining to watch.

Good suggestion Kyuss, thanks, going to look more into it.

Any suggestions on how to get 1 to pick a different spot, or can I get the shrimp to pick a new spot? Think they may have been a bit annoying as I never saw them unless he was out until he decided to move across the tank to a solitary island.... I'm a little lost on this 1

I lost 1 of the 2 cleaner shrimp, found this morning and it's belly toward the back was green. I'll be heading to BlueStar tomorrow to get another, hopefully Alcatraz won't take a sudden interest.

A few new additions

A few new additions

Picked up another skunk cleaner shrimp earlier, along with a Red Firefish, emerald crab, and 10 more hermits.

Measurement

Measurement

Had the tape measure handy during feeding and Alcatraz is currently 10 inches long and a good 1/2 inch in diameter (dorsal fin down).

Added a Hydor Koralia 1150 earlier and hopefully I've got the flow direction better because I had a few ticked off corals. I had no idea the 1 I had in was only 550 gph.
