been around the freshwater game for a while, but im in the process of setting up my first reef tank. my question is pretty simple, are chillers required kit in the phoenix area? or is it more in case of emergency type deal?

Depends on what you keep your ac at. I am planning on getting one for next year but if you keep your ac 75-78 all the time should be ok. Could get away with running some fans too

im pretty new to the area so most of the time its between 74-78. 80 is usually as high as i ever let it get, thats the 'away' setting on my nest anyway.

I've never had to run one, with my house being allowed into the low 80s during the hot months. If you're someone who lets the house get up into the mid-high 80s or higher, it might be something you need to address, but I think it's generally uncommon to be running one on a regular basis unless you are running equipment that adds to the problem like MH lights.

thanks! thats kind of what i was thinking, but given how daunting it is to break into the reef game the paranoid side of me is like "its the desert bruh, you need one" my more rational side didnt think so.

I have the a.c. set to 78 and I just have a small cup fan blowing on the water down in my sump. Between the fan and the heater my tank is always at 75. Evap cooling works great you just have to top of the tank with fresh water all the time. My next project will be adding a auto top off.

The low humidity works to our advantage here. As others have said, fans are very effective for evaporative cooling. My AC is set at 77 during the day, and i only need fans to keep my tank at 78.

I set 78 degrees for my house in the summer, and I would like to set my tank at 80. I just find that corals do well for me at that temp.

I use halides and have no issues with this set-up. In the winter, I run my house at 76 and have to have heaters for the tank.

Petier have very low efficiency and will probably work only on very small tank(<5-10 gallon)

Okay thanks for the info. My system is close to 60 gallons total. I will stick with my original plan and get an ATO for the evap cooling.

Just to pipe in, I've never had a chiller. I use LED's and they don't generate much heat on a tank. My tanks have heaters and they run most of the time actually. I keep the house at around 76 degrees and the tanks around 80.
