Phosban/Carbon in the same reactor?

Since I have "some" experience with that reactor you got....here is what I did.

I would put about 1/3 GFO to 2/3 Carbon, and tune it so it would dance a bit. Too much and the GFO get pulverized into a power and get passed. Make sure you put a mesh bag on the end of the return hose to catch any debris and tune it with that little pump I gave you.

I never really worried about the carbon getting used up as I have a bunch of bulk from a group buy.....its the GFO that was expensive. Its a trade off by mixing them the efficiencies will be cut, and possibly use more product, but thats what one has to deal with when using just the one.

If your just starting, your GFO will be used quickly, so you should change it out a little faster at first. If you change it once a month on average, its a good place to end up at and not too spendy.

Play with it, see what works for you. It is better to have two for each product as they do like different flows.....but this is a start and will work better than just a couple of bags hanging.......baby steps.

I ran it mixed the entire time.....make sure you rinse both first as well. I just got some PURA Phoslock and it comes with a velcro bag that is big enough and perfect for this job.

The ratio is up to you, but I always liked more carbon in the mix,(helps clarity but pulling out yellowing compounds) which is probably why I have had high P04........

The proof is in the puddin' and results are what counts. Test your params and if your P04 isn't getting low enough, adjust the ratio.

The rate of absortion is related on how much there is too be absorbed. Lots of PO4 and little other organics, the GFO will be used quickly. Brand and especially size of particle, ie: surface area (more smaller vs less bigger per volume) dictate this as well. There is no exact science, just test for the PO4 and watch your clarity. Its just another drop in the bucket for the price we pay to keep pretty things.
