Phosphate media

I like to use my Rena XP2 canister filter for phosphate reduction in my 75g. What is good phosphate reducing media that have been successfully used on the Rena XP? Also how many bags of media should I implement in the cannister. I have two baskets in the canister.

Main question is that phosphate reducing is very important in sps tank?

To answer the second question, YES zero phosphate is ideal. PO4 will inhibit growth and impact color.

As for the Rena question....I dont have one. But in TLF reactor you want the media to tumble at the top. So if you can control flow then I guess it would work.

I will just put phosphate reducer media in the Xp2, is flow rate too strong for it? Otherwise I just place it in my HOB skimmer.

Not sure on what type of media but I think you do want a little phosphate, Zero phosphate's are not ideal conditions.

I try to keep phosphate to less than 0.04. When I hit that (Hanna) I change my media (Rowaphos).

I've used phosban, rowa and now finally settled on fauna marin.

I think it's all a matter of personal preference.

I use rowaphos - very effective for phosphate removal. the instructions on the container tell you how much to use to treat your tank volume

I also have a canister filter running in the cabinet. It only holds a small amount of media and some carbon so I thought I was just wasting electricity on water movement until I read this forum and decided to try your idea. Also, can any biological filtration take place inside it w/o light?

Has anyone notice that the Rowaphos' granular would solidify into clump. It would go in as granulars and when remove some of the granulars form small rock size pieces.

I haven't heard anyone mention Phosguard.

What do people have against this product? I don't run a reactor, so I like something that can go into a mesh bag and drop in the sump for filtration. And spare me the "that's passive filtration" talk... I understand that most people think that.

If Phosguard isn't a good product, what could be used in that manner?

I'll add my 2 cents.

I was running a 2 little fishes reator with its media. I probably should have changed it more frequently than every 3 months. I think 2 months is the max for my 120. Anyway, I picked up some phos media from bulkreefsupply, and put in more than usual, and with in a week the difference is astounding. My fuge is crystal clear, and allthough my tank never had anything but the usual stuff on the glass, the water is now crystal clear.

things I learned.

1. bulkreefsupply rocks.
2. change media more frequently
3. Phosphate reactor are a must.

Phosguard is an aluminum based product while GFO is iron based. People have shown that phosguard can release trace amounts of aluminum which may or may not be bad for corals. Iron, on the other hand, is typically low in reef tanks and could actually be beneficial if released.

That's at least the reasoning why you won't see phosguard recommended.

Good to know... can some of the previously mentioned phosphate removing media be used in a bag? Perhaps something like the pellet size GFO?

What kind of carbon is good to buy from Bulk Reef Supply?

I use Carbon/phos remover in a bag i store it in the over flow box and it does the job.
