Photo Editing Program.

What photo editing program would you guy's recommend for a Mac? I cannot afford Photo Shop, but was looking at Apple's Aperture 2.
Thanks.

Have you looked at Photoshop Elements? It's got all of the most used stuff of Photoshop at a fraction of the cost (around $100 versus $600+).

John,

If Aperture looks interesting to you I'd recommend that you take a look at Adobe Lightroom as well. I own both and really prefer the image quality of LR over Aperture. On a recent workshop I had a guy, who worked at the executive level for Apple, and he preferred LR too. :)

At some point you'll probably want to add Elements to that mix but LR would be an excellent starting point. It takes away 100% of the pain from RAW processing.

Cheers,
Doug

Thanks guys, I was not aware of Adobe Elements when I posted this. How do LR and Elements differ, I am assuming they would complement each other.

LR, from a feature standpoint, is nearly identical to Aperture. While they do have some localized editing features you're generally working on the image as a whole.

Elements is a stripped down version of Photoshop. These are what folks refer to as "pixel" editors. They allow you to do very targeted adjustments.

Ideally both are good to have.

I use elements. Very good program because I mainly "auto adjust." One guy I work with uses lightroom and he really likes it. More than CS3 I guess on his opinion. I've never used it personally.

Canon gives you a RAW editor free in the box with the camera which should be enough. I haven't heard of any compatibility issues with Adobe and the G10 though.

CS3 is a very very powerful tool if you understand how to use all of its features and functions. Lightroom would be better if you want something very user-friendly and easy to use. Other than that, I'd stick to Canon's digital photo professional software or Nikon's NX2. Hope that helps buddy.

Not sure if they have a MAC app for this but google has Piccasa which works quite well for generic editing. Lighting and such.

I have used it in the past and it has allot of cool features. Another reefer recommended it to me and is free? Just a thought?

I have all the photoshop programs and find I use picassa more than most!

Check out "The GIMP." I t's a free, open source photoshop clone. It's been a while since I've used it, but the last time I did it was pretty darn close to photoshop in featuresets.

Thanks guys, this forum has been the most useful on this site; quick responses and helpful info. If you know anything about fungal infections, please check out my post in the reef discussion forum "fungal infection". Thanks.
