Photo Journal of my new 120...

Well then Copepods it is! White ants are exactly what they remind me of, and I got tons of them! A year from now, when I get my mandarin, it should be happy huh? Any other predators really like copepods?

The brown may very well be algae, but in the morning it's all gone. Turbo's and hermits have it clean - totally! It's only after a day in the lights that it comes back. Weird. Any suggestion as to what to do? Don't need to siphon as the snails clean it. Am I still in some sort of cycle?

As for the lights, is 12 hours too much? Should I cut back?

And I was just reporting the population explosion of the bristleworms and stomatella. You'd already assisted me with knowing they were "good guys" ;)

Typhon - I'll post exact numbers later tonight. My AquaController only allows for 1.5 degree temperature swings. And yes I test for phosphate and it was way out of control in the beginning (I even had some hair algae), but none sice then. I even cancelled my phosphate reactor order.

I don't know for sure about the ick, but the first two of the clowns seemed to have white spots before they disappeared. This is the only indicator of ick I've noticed. The Chromis didn't have it, or show signs and still don't, but those two clowns did. The third clown seems fine too. Just curious at this point. Is there a test for ick? I'd hate to sacrafice a fish to find out, but I need to know before the pair bond clowns arrive.

Sorry.. there is no test for "Marine ich" that I know of. Do you quarantine new fish??

Typhon -

Thanks for the read, but after reading I'm even more doubtful that these clowns had ich - judging by the pics in the article. The clowns only had a few very, very, very small white spots on the top of the head - not all over the body. And, as reported earlier, they had white stringy stuff coming from their posterior - indicating internal parasites.

And no, I didn't quarantine the new clowns. They came straight from the breeder's tank and I figured they were OK. But I am working on a new QT/HT that goes in when I get my new sump (not part of it - just a timing thing).

Chris.. I didn't quarantine my fish at the beginning either. After having to catch 5 fish in a 75g Reef, I learned my lesson. Since then I have quarantine every fish I purchase for atleast 2 weeks (recommend 4-6 weeks).

You may not of had Marine ich, but it does start with a few white spots on the head and fins. The pics shows a serious case of Marine ich.

Your VHOs are on 14 hours a day, and your MH are on 11 hours a day. I'd reduce it to 12 hours VHO and MH can be 10.5 to 11 hours per day.

The dinoflagellates disappeared every night, but came back to life every day when the lights were on. I'd see bubbles under and in the algae mat. It was pretty gross. I'll try to find that image for you.

All wrasses eat pods.

thewuf sorry but this summer i intend to jock your stand/cabinet for your aqaurium. its the best i have seen. more info on it would be very nice. by the way great tank.

Okay, here it is:

My fighting conch would actually use its snout to look for food under the mat, as if it was searching for something under a blanket.

Yeah, that is a sweet looking stand! Just the excuse I need to upgrade to a bigger tank! :D I think I'm going to have to confiscate it from you. Where do you live? And when are you going on vacation? hehe

melev - I'll re-program the lights, and try that. The image you posted, while nice, is nothing like what I've got. This is what it looks like...

clowntank10 - thanks! What would you like to know?

jarhed - thanks to you too! My location is under my name, but - dang - you just missed my summer vacation. Now you're gonna have to wait till Christmas! ;)

ok, the wuf i wanted to know what kind of wood you used in the construction. can i get a specific paint. was it hard to put the whole thing together. anymistakes or things i should consider. etc i dont want to build it and say oh i should have done this or that. i am going to build it with someone who has beed working with wood almost all his life. but he saids he never built a cabinet/stand for an aquarium. i also wanted to know if that the top cupboards and lower cupboards are the same height. thanx. sorry took a while to reply. i only looked at pics

clowntank10 -

OK, the frame is made with 2X4, 2X6, and 3/4 plywood. The "skin" is made from 3/4 MDF because it was going to be painted (can't use if you want to stain - if you want to stain substitute the MDF with cabinet grade plywood). You can follow the pics to see how to build and ask any specifics here or in email. The paint is two layers of Kilz latex, and about 6 coats (really) of American Tradition Super White High Gloss paint from Lowes.

The only "gotcha" is to make sure you don't cut the holes in the side panels for viewing the tank until you get it into place (the cabinet - not the tank!). It's fine, but it produces more stress on the cabinet when you move it around (the top part the place where the tank sits could hold an elephant). Nothing I'd change about the design - if I were to build another I'd do it the same way.

The top and bottom are the same. The bottom was built "Sump Specific" meaning I knew how high I had to make it for my skimmer to fit. The bottom is 36" tall and the tank viewing is just short of 24" to hide the top water line. The top then went to the ceiling height (which in my case was 8' in the basement) so it turned out to be another 36" - lucky, but it gives good balance to the look!

Hope this helps and ask anything - anytime!

Julio - Thanks!
