photosynthetic sponges?

What seperates them from other sponges?

I've had this sponge for quiet awhile but it doesn't really seem to be bothered by exposion to air. Trying to learn more about it in depth.

Photosynthetic means that they need light. In this case, they probably have zooxanthae(correct me if I'm wrong) algae, like coral and clams, in them. If they don't get proper lighting, they starve.

Generally its not a good idea as most sponges will be killed by exposure to air.

There are some sponges that live on reef flats exposed at low tide. but...

It is very difficult to identify sponges. It usually involves disolving part of the sponge and looking at the resulting spikules under a microscope.

From what I've heard, the symbiont in sponges is more likely to be a type of cyano. It's not necessarily as efficient a producer of energy for the sponge. I don't have a reference at the moment, but if you'd like I can go look it up.
