since Adam did his phyto demo at the nov meeting i have been cultureing. well now i have waaaaaaaaaay to much and need to get rid of some. i have nano and tetra. if anyone needs any let me know. i'll give it to anyone who needs it but will accept a frag or trade of somekind if you really twist my arm.

im also working on getting some iso. the reason i want iso is Nano has EPA fatty acids, and Iso has DHA fatty acids. these 2 acids need to be balanced in whatever consumes the phyto. theres a podcast on talkingreef.com that explains it so much better than i ever could. its called All About Phyto.

I would appreciate some of each.......I just lost my nano when my garage temp dropped too low.

Thanks

P.

Jpitts, if you have enough, I could definatly use some Tetraselmis. As for the other strain, do you have nannochloropsis? if so, I could use some of that as well.

isnt that what your cultureing adam? yeah i can get you some as well. i have more phyto in the fridge than i have food. its sad, im even feeding my quarenteen tank.

yeah, I have 4 tanks I'm feeding phyto to and I still have extra, lol. I'm actually culturing Nannochloris, it's a bit different from Nannochloropsis. Nannochloropsis is more nutritious, just slightly, but better nonetheless. Tetraselmis is even far more nutritious than either.

my bad i thought you were cultureing nanochlorpsis, i'll get you some as well. i have a disk of nanochloris but havent gotten a big enough station to get 3 different strains at the same time. i need to build a set up like yours, the 5 gallon bucket is strarting to look ghetto.

If you are culturing TET and Nannochlorpsis, than i'd avoid nannochloris altogether. It's a nice easy strain to culture but the others are so much better to feed with. Now do you have the nannochloropsis or the nannochloropsus (j. chlorella)? I had ordered both of these from FAF and ending up recieving the nannochloris instead. I let em know I was upset about it, but since I was just starting out and testing the waters I didn't push the issue too much with em.

Nannochloropsis is what im cultureing. so dont worry about the nannochloris?? i have a disk from florida aqua farms if anyone want it then! i guess that was a waste of money.

Oh no, not a waste at all, but after a bit of research into the different strains you have, you'll notice that the other two would benefit your tank more. Although having 3 different strains going in wouldn't hurt one bit either. Just like fish food, having a variety is a good thing. I think nannochloris is a little more forgiving when it comes to temperature, ph, and all the other water parameters that we deal with in culturing phyto. plus, I don't think nannochloropsis can be frozen and thawed out, where I'm pretty sure you can do this with nannochloris. They all have pro's and con's. I think you started with 3 good strains to choose from. Getting Iso next would also be a smart move too. Very nutritous, only being a brown algae, I'd be worried I'd throw away a bunch thinking they crashed already. We'll see, :D

I'll get you a pack set up too Adam, have you ever heard of a phyto called chaetoceros? i started a strain with DT's and it is a brown algea and was told it was probally chaetoceros. I've done some research on phyto but i guess i havent gotten into it as much as needed being i have never heard of that strain.

I'm unfamiliar with that strain as well. Look at the bottle of DT's and it lists the 3 strains in it, two are green algae, the other is the brown. Kinda narrows it down. Unless you are using the old DT's stuff, then it only has 2 strains and none of those are a brown one. I forget what all 3 are in DT;s though, it's been awhile since I had to pay for phyto, lol.

its a newer bottle. im not at home so i cant look at the bottle. when i get off work i will check it out. it was just a test run before i decided to buy some. do you think it is worth continueing? im thinking about throwing it out and starting iso, but dont want to waste a good algea? whats your thoughts on it?

well, you hear all the claims that DT's is better for your tank than "whatever" brand. So I would venture to say that any strain you get from starting with DT's is worth keeping around. Just more variety. But, if memory serves, the brown strain in DT's is very nutrituous, high in EPA's and HUFA's. If you have a stable culture started from it already, keep it around until you get the T-iso going. As a bare minimum, store a smidge of it in the fridge for later use. I keep a small container with maybe a cup or two of nannochloris stored int he fridge and every month or two I swap it out for some fresh phyto. But it gives me a starter in the event I mess up my other cultures.

ok it has to be one of theese 3
nannochloropsis oculata
phaeodactylum tricornutum
or chlorella.

i know its not nanno, so it has to be one of the other 2 im not familiar with them or their colors. so i have a strain of phaeodactylum tricornutum or chlorella.

i guess i need to get a bigger phyto station.

hey paul T, are you going to the meeting? i dont think im going to be able to make it. i have to work. if so can you take paul W and adam some phyto for me. i'll give you some as well, if not its not biggie, i have to go to the city in a couple weeks anyway i can get it to them then.

J.D.
If you still have some phyto, I would really appreciate some. I'm not sure which kind would be best for my tank but any would be great. My tank is new as of December 30th so I don't have any potential frags yet, but I will get you one as soon as I can.
Thanks
