phyto starter

Does someone have a small amount of the fresh water phyto (don't know the name) that I can get a start from?

Have money, need critters.

Thanks,

THat was interesting, for some reason I looked at the number of posts I had and it was 666.

So I am posting this to get over it. : )

hey steve, i have plenty Nannochloropsis its fresh or salt. i may be wrong but its one of the more nutricious of all the phyto. i will bring you some if you need it.

JD, Nannochloropsis is slightly better than Nannochloris, but it's only high in DHA and lacking in EPA. Both Nannochloris and Nannochloropsis can be cultured in marine and freshwater environments. If you are looking for one that is both high in EPA and DHA then something like Tetraselmis is preferred. Steve, if you are willing to take the drive to Ardmore for the slightly better Nannochloropsis, then it would be worth it if you are looking for nutrition. If you are looking for something just to play around with and to feed to the tank from time to time, then Nannochloris will do great. Just let me know what you decide. I'll have a 20oz bottle for you for the whopping price of a hand shake :)

i have tetraselmis too, im bringing some of both for adam and paul w sat night.

Sweet. Do you have any Tahitian Isochrysis? I could really use the EPA boost with it.

I still need to pick some up as well from ya Travis, I've just been busy in the evenings this week writing a paper for class.

im sure adam will get both cultures stated and doing good soon so you city folk can have acess to them all the time. steve feel free to get a starter of both one from me and travis and feed your tank and see how your tank reacts to both of them. i also have a disk of nannochloris from florida aqua farms i can get you but personally i like the the nannochloropsis and tetra. thats just me!

no travis i dont have that, i have Nannochloropsis, nannochloris, tetraselmis and some strain i got from DT's ( brown ). i'll look for it though, i finally found something i can do and make a little money at so im all in !!

I've occassionally read up on your DT's attempt. I'm beginning to wonder if you are culturing a ciliate of some form that may have tainted the original phytoplankton culture. IF they are coincedentally ciliates, I might start my culture station back up. This would be the optimal bridging food for things like Yellow Watchman Goby Larvae. Can I get a tiny vial of your brown water? I would like to see if I can find anything under a microscope on it.

i have no idea what it is travis, i keep spliting it, sometimes in fourths and it comes back and gets to a certain brown level and stops. i didnt want to stop cultureing it being its live, or so i think and my tank likes it.

How many bubbles should your air pump be putting into a culture and how big of an air pump do you need?? I have pumps and I need to make sure they are big enough. Thanks

A simple air pump that you can pick up at WalMart works fine. Don't use an airstone, and enough to have a rolling boil, per say. The bubbles are used to keep the water well churned so the culture stays suspended off of the bottom. Now, the tricky part is balancing a pump on more than one or two bottles.

Well in that case.....just need to pick some valves.....

Get the best valves you can, the plastic ones will make you scream and cuss all the time. :D It's a horrable battle fighting the cheap valves. But then, I am using 1 pump on 4-6 bottles at a time. A good tip to help with controlling the airflow into the cultures is to use rigid tubing to be placed inside the bottle and the softer silcone tubing to run it to the pump. Keep all the rigid tubing at the same level in each bottle and fill each bottle to the same level as well. Makes working the cheapy valves alot easier.
