Phytoplankton from frozen?

FWIW,my first trial with starting a culture with Nanno 3600 didn´t work.:worried2:
I seeded a 2L soda bottle with a small amount of it.Medium was new IO water at 1.010 fertilized with FAF F/2,Chlorine sterilized and strongly bubbled under light.
Water changed from light green to milky white in a couple of days.
May be my product was very old.I will try this with the other NAN containing IA products.
It would help a lot if other hobbyists run this simple experiment at home and then we compare results!:strange:

Why not just buy some disks or starter cultures that are intended for that purpose? From my experience leaving out phyto cultures, seems like any live culture would have a very limited life.

Honestly,I didn´t try NAN.But I will now!
Now,what you are saying is that Reed´s NAN frozen pastes are ALIVE!:eek1:
This will prove as remarkable news as well as surprising.The subject of the living (or not) condition of IA frozen pastes has been widely discussed over the years,since they were introduced to the market.That old dicussion rose sometimes to bio-philosophical heights addressing what life is.:rolleye1:
But the current belief is that frozen pastes are "not living" and that they can´t be used to start cultures.I believe this is sustained by the Company as well.
Nevertheless,IA NAN paste,3600 and now the new products,are widely used by clown breeders for the "green water" technique.Even if non living algae cells won´t process NH3,but contribute to it´s build up in larval water.Which doesn´t happen.Furthermore,I sometimes forget a pitcher of it in the warm fish room overnight,and it still smells fresh in the morning.As if it was alive.
Now,if NAN containing IA pastes are alive as Gresh says; how come the company has resigned the strong market tool of stating that these products are "LIVE"?:uhoh3:I´m sure many more people will use them,knowing they are not buying dead algal cells?

We cannot sell live cultures as per our agreement with our source of the cultures. We only advertise 1 product as being live (Phyto-Feast LIVE), the rest we do not. The fact people have cultured Nanno3600 isn't something we'll ever advertise, its just a cool factoid. We have no issue selling our algae, just the opposite in fact. We just added another greenhouse to increase production. Its for zooplankton, but that will free up other space for more algae production. We're also still filling the last 2 new greenhouses. I'll need a vehicle soon to get from end to end of the greenhouses :lol:

The initial reports of Nanno3600 being cultured came from customers of ours. I have no idea what they did, but I do know most that have tried this since added too much. I'm still trying to nail the Phycologist down on doing this, he's pretty dang busy right now. Once I get the info, I'll pass it on.

Dela,this is not an attempt to replace normal algal starters.
It is mostly to ascertain if frozen algae remain alive and can be brought back to vegetative growth,something of academic interest but that had been a subject of discussion by aquarists as well.
And in many areas of the world,we don´t have easy access to starter cultures,so when cultures crash,a frozen back up would prove valuable.

Gresh,I am not suggesting that IA sales need to be boosted:hmm5:
I say that if you are selling live algae and calling it non living,it´s like selling champagne as some cheap wine.:crazy1:
Besides,if you have a commercial agreement of not selling live algae and you do,but without beating the drum,you are still breaking your agreement...:eek2:
I tried again to bring frozen 3600 back to life and again it was a failure.As I give credit to your word,I will keep trying with other IA products containing NAN frozen paste.
I encourage all readers of this posts who happen to have some of these products,that they start a culture as I had,so a wider base of objective observations could shed some more light on this subject.
