Here is a pic of a wall hammer I bought here on reefcentral from another reefer.

Any advice on how to care for them or how to get maximum extension would be appreciated!!!

Looks nice, and has very pretty coloration.

They tend to like medium to high lighting (fair amount of flourescent up to MH, generally), and prefer medium flow so that the tentacles sway gently.

As far as extension, hammers don't always extend that far, but if you added it recently it might need a few days to adjust before it shows full extension.

That was one of my favotie corals.I hope you dont have any mushrooms around it.

Just got a Wall hammer today. Just curious about the mushroom comment b/c I placed the hammer about 5 inches from a small red mushroom colony.

been like that for about six months and oddly enough neither the hammers or the shrooms seem to mind at all :)

Thanks for your input. I didn't think mushroom proximity would be an issue with a wall hammer

I had a mushroom frag fall on my hammer.I didnt notice it for a couple of days. The hammer you see in my avatar in no longer as a result of the mushrooms burning my hammer.I tried to save it but it was to late.It just kept receding and i even fragged it to try and save it.All i have left is the skeleton now.One of my favorite pieces I had. This hammer was a large one as well.

sorry to here about your hammer. It looks like it was huge. What furious wrath did you rain down upon those shrooms?

NO, I don't even know whatt hey are.

I believe, if I'm not mistaken, they are commonly called Emerald Crabs.

jjmcat - sorry to hear about your hammer. It's the same coloring as the one I got yesterday and measures about 4"-5" long and about 2" wide. I'll defintely be keeping an eye on the shrooms.

Its possible for it to nip.The one I had was red.As far as the mushrooms go,well there no longer in my tank.

They can nip but not because they are hammer predators or anything, but sometimes they confuse the polyps with harmful bubble algae. I have had two in my tank for about 2 yrs. I occasionally find a very tiny piece of hammer or frogspawn or yuma on the sand, but no real harm is ever really done.

I had a nice frag fall into some Platy zoanthids for a day or two and it took a vicious beating. It didn't kill it but it was close.

Know that you mentioned it I did find some little tips off my frogspawn one day in my tank, and I couldn't figure it out????

I guess the little emrald was the culprit!!! Like you said though everything is fine with the coral.. HA!!!! Learn something everyday!

a lot of times euphillia in genral seem to drop or expel there polyps?reasoning behind it i havent a clue but i have had 5 or 6 in the shop that would drop polyps of at any given time especially if they were moved ,bagged or disturbed in the tank.also i have a neon green hammer in a show tank that i frag about 2 times a month and nearly every time i frag a head or 2 off there are some little polyps floating aroun the tank.just my 2 cents.
