Hello guys, I need some help"¦ the last weekend my LFS place in sale some clownfish, I wanted an snowflake but the wife wants a Picasso , long history short we get the Picasso, the sale me as a premium Picasso (non grade A or B) doing a research on internet I found out that the premium could be A or B grade, anyway I pay a reduce price and these guys looks great.

but looking at the pictures on internet the middle white strip connect with the one at the tail and in some cases with the head, my guys have connected the middle with the head on both sides and on the back but not connects to the tail so my question is are they Picassos? Any other reefer has Picassos with the same configuration?

Thanks a lot for any help in advance

Ive worked in a lfs for 4 years. They are gladiator. The grade comes from the dealer but if they were A or B you would be paying 100+ each. I wouldnt worry about the grade. Thats more for breeding purposes.

Okay, time to expand on what's already been mentioned:

Grading: Letter grading on a generic level (A or B) typically applies to the physical appearance of a Picasso (no other variants). Grade A means that all bars are connected, grade B means (and this is up for debate) that two stripes are connected. A high end Picasso breeder with throw out all sorts of babies in all grades. Some breeders also grade their fish with names like extreme, or super, or premium -- these are simply marketing terms of don't really mean anything other than the amount of money you have to spend and ways for the breeder to separate juveniles into different price groups.

The caveat to the letter grade rule that I previously stated is that some companies also use letter grades for other morphs. For example, Sea & Reef DaVinci grade "extreme" have 3 fused stripes on at least one side of the body, while their grade A have two fused stripes on each side of the body, and grade B have "soft wavy lines and all 3 stripes are distinct".

Gladiator clowns are ocellaris. Picasso clowns are percula. Breeders have different criteria for what makes a Gladiator, and the name is often interchangeable with DaVinci and Fancy White (according to ProAquatix) and Fancy ocellaris (according to ORA) and may have a chin strap (Sea & Reef).

ORA has a really good write-up on what makes a Gladiator: http://www.orafarm.com/blog/2016/06/26/ora-gladiators-now-available/

So what kind of fish do you have? For me, it's hard to tell in the photos. Typically I can tell by looking at the eyes -- more black or brown around the iris and it's an ocellaris. I also look at the dorsal spines -- 11 and it's an ocellaris and 10 and it's a percula. It's hard to count the spines in the photos. Also, when the fish have a wider black outline, I tend to think they are Picasso. Since these are juveniles, the black coloration hasn't fully grown in yet.

If I were forced to guess, I'd go with grade B Picasso (because not all stripes are touching) but would also add a "premium" or "super" to the name because both fish have either a chin strap or helmet, which makes them more desirable. Long story short: your LFS probably got the name right.
