Pick out my new coral

Bent

I got nothin'
Well now that things are stable, I'm looking at livestock again.

I still have a Kole in QT and he's doing great, but I need to add some corals or other stock.

My nitrates are back down and my last po4 average over the last 3 weeks has been .05 I'm up to dosing 3mls of vinegar an hour 24hrs a day. I'm still a little gun shy to go after the sps again since I lost the last two attempts.

So I was thinking about doing a clam, either a hippo or Deresa, or just chuck it all go for another birdsnest or a green slimer or something.

So I dunno what to get. Any suggestions?

Current stock:
Flame hawk
Engineer
Blue streak wrasse
Male single lyretail anthia
Green mandarin
Kole tang (in QT)

Green sinularia
Toadstool
Torch
Hammer
Frogspawn
Favia brain
Lobo brain
Some brown Zoas
Huge rock flower nem

What aspect is it that you like about your favorite coral in the tank?

Hmmm... That's an enciteful question.

My favorite thing in the tank is the big rock flower. My favorite [/i]coral[/i] is probably one of the brains. They are both similar to nems and do more besides just sit there.

I like to have livestock that has some sort of reaction or "personality". Both those corals have a bit of personality, for a coral at least.

If you can't keep sps right now I wouldn't get a clam.
You need some color in there. Just look around and find some lps you like to add color and movement

I think I could keep sps in there, I just am a little scared to.

Right now I'm leaning toward either a Deresa or a hippo clam I think. Therein lies another decision.

Prettier or rarer? Hmmm

What about some gorgonians? My tanks always seem to be SPS heavy with a few other things that add some movement. If you like LPS what about a nice elegance or some duncans?

Duncans: grow fast, have big heads, and wave in breeze.

People knock gsp, but if you keep them on an island they look good and different.

I believe monti caps and digitatas are the easiest sps. I've heard of people having trouble with slimers and birdsnests

What about galaxea for movement? Beware of the stinger! No mushrooms in your list? Usually cheap frag pieces can be picked up and they multiply quick.

As far as fish, what about a blenny? Unless you are looking for more swimming, possibly a dwarf angel (but we all know of there 'reef safe with caution' warning). I learned that recently..

What about some gorgonians and a torch?

I'm not against a larger torch, or a gorg for that matter.

Reefgardner had some beautiful purple photosynth gorgs a while back that I should have jumped on. But it just wasn't the time.

I may get shot for saying this, but I've reeeeeeaaallly been interested in trying my hand again at another sea Apple. I kept one for years back in the day, but I haven't had one for a long long time. I know not a coral or anything, but it's a goal at some point.

All the suggestions are great, Duncans are sweet as well.

What to do what to do.

You like movement and your tank would look good with some red. How about an ORA red goniopora? Very hardy and it grows well in the right conditions. Not cheap but not crazy $$ and worth it.

What kind of lights do you have? Looks like a 75 gallon tank is there a sump? What's with the egg crate beneath the sand? I'm an SPS guy so I would naturally suggest those but you are the final say.

I need a bigger phone for reading these threads. The 6" screen isn't cutting it anymore. I wonder if that means Im getting old?

I always thought flowerpots were impossible to keep?

The lights are the older reefbreeders/evergrow fixtures.

The sump is in the basement, it's a 50g stock tank, and I also have a 30g plumbed in the system that I'm going to plant...at some point.

That's a hold over from the earlier days where the techniques for maintaining our aquariums weren't as developed as they are today. They seem to be doing quite well in recent years, especially captively propagated specimens.

I feel like a big leather behind the rock work in the middle would look good. I used to have a hugh leather and loved it. It had good polyp extension. How is yours doing now? I saw a post you had regarding that..
