Picked up a new Aussie Elegance

Hey guys,

I picked up a new Elegance on Friday...curious as to what you think of it. Did a bunch of research on them but always get different views.

It seems as if the one i have is one long oblong polyp with multiple mouths...is this true?

How do these actually grow, does the skeleton get bigger or just the polyp?

I've heard you should feed it and not to feed it. Looking for peoples experience with them.

I just picked one up at the LFS today too! I was told it was an australian elegance, but don't know how to tell the difference other than if it dies it's probably indo. Any other ways to tell the difference? I really like the bluish people color of yours. Mine is a small frag with only three mouths. You can see it was cut on the side closest to the camera. It appears to be healing with small tentacles growing out where it was cut.

Australian has some orange on there cone.

That looks like a very nice piece. Looks like its gonna have a neon green glow with purple tips...pretty jealous of that.

The skeleton on mine appears to be a white color on the outside, i was told it was an Aussie...I really hope it is.

Here's a pic of my first one...it died about 2 months ago. I suspect the feather duster boring through the side of it was the culprit. It was sold as an aussie elegance. Seeing that the come is predominately orange, I'm sure it was.

If the skeleton looks cut, it is an Aussie. Lactaters' piece is rounded on both ends, most likely an Indo, which is why it died. Indonesian elegances come from very deep water and are doomed as soon as they are on the boat being cooked in the sun (because they took all of the ones growing in shallower waters). Any real Aussie elegance you find in a store will have either one or usually both sides of the skeleton look like it is cut, although this is not the case all the time. Basically, if it looks like it is supposed to look like in the store (long, flowing tentacles and no tissue retraction at all) and it has been there for at least a week or two and it STILL looks like that, it is an Aussie. Indonesian elegances melt in stores because they are almost solely found in deep water. Granted, if you have a LFS you trust then you're lucky and you can just ask them if you need more consideration.

By the way, awesome first elegance, is it really that blue/teal?

Cptn...yes...i took that picture with my phone so no color alteration...it has a nice teal look to it. Also my bulbs are very old..so hopefully with an upgrade and pull some intense coloration.

I got took on my first elegance! It lasted about 3 weeks, but that's definitely not worth the $80 I paid for it. My new one is cut on at least one side...I didn't inspect the other side before I placed the coral behind the rock. I guess that is good news though!

Mine is almost identical to the OP. keep it in the sandbed with medium flow. I feed mysis, brine or my special blend about 2x a week. The feeding drastically improve its coloration and polyp extension.

Are you feeding whole mysis, or do you cut it up?

Also, my elegance has a new tenant...lol.

For Mysis, they are quite small. Thaw a cube, rinse & serve.

My female clown began to host the elegance for about a week then moved on. Male never did though.
