Pickle water?

I work at a certain fastfood restaurant and I was able to get one of their just emptied pickle buckets , So I rinsed it and scrubbed it lightly . I assumed that the pickle smell was gone , so I filled it with RO water and it STILL smells like pickles

Can I make it into SW anyway?
or does the pickle smell mean something?

I would assume you'll be alright. I don't know though. I guess pickle juice is largely vinegar (an acid), but I don't think that will be much of an issue after rinsing it. I know certain phosphate compounds are used as a preservative in some foods, also don't believe this would be an issue after rinsing. I don't believe preservatives like that are used in pickles anyways, seeing as pickling is the preservation process itself. I would think if your fish can handle the pickle smell you'll be ok :) Would test the mixed water first though just to check ph for phosphates etc.

Under disc1's avatar. Sporto0 asked if his pic was Tesla and I was also curious about the formula.

As suggested, test your RO/DI water for PO4 and NO3 just to be safe. If you decide to bleach the bucket, remember to rinse very well and I would recommend using a dechlorinater in the rinse as well to help pull any remaining bleach out of the micro scratches in the plastic.

I get rid of the pickle smell in pickle jars by rinsing out thoroughly and then fill it with tap water as hot as you can get it. Let that sit on the counter until it's completely cooled, dump water and no more smell. Not sure if it will work on plastic but it can't hurt.

The formula describes a relationship between free energy and the equilibrium constant. I have no idea what that means...I'm a math major, not physics, so I understood the formula just enough to look it up

Betcha the avatar is Josiah Willard Gibbs :)

The avatar is indeed Nikola Tesla. The formula equals delta G. It gives the relationship between free energy and the rate constant for a reaction.

I wouldn't worry about the pickle smell just rinse it well, I know lots of people that get food grade containers that had syrup for soda.... there water smells like root beer lol and no ill effects

I have a pickle bucket

I have a pickle bucket

I am currently using a pickle bucket, and yeah that pickle smell will go away if you just keep rinsing the bucket and letting it sit with water in it. I have had no problems, and have been using it for years on my freshwater tank, also transported 5g of ro for my saltwater setup and still no issues...id say your ok

Thanks for the explanation. I tried looking up the formula but to no avail. It's been more than a week or so since I've had Physics so I didn't have a clue--same goes for my math classes!
