Pickling lime

I know enough chemistry to know the difference between sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate, and I know that epsom salts is magnesium sulfate. But I had never heard of pickling lime until Scott told me about it (thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!!).

All these years I've been spending big bucks for calcium hydroxide labelled as Kalkwasser at the LFS. Who knew that food grade calcium hydroxide is available for so much less $$! With the money I will save, I can justify getting some new gadget for my tank . . .:D

I'm sticking around to see how much more valuable stuff I can learn from you guys!!

Hey has anyone found a good place to get pickling lime? About how much is it say compared to 800g of Kalkwasser?

Thanks, Chris

I bought mine from a friend for $5. Mrs. Wages 16oz. 454g.
I think you can get it @ Costco, but im sure.

There is am Armenian/Slavic store not to far from Sunrise (I think) on Coloma that has it for $3 or $4 a container. The store is on the right side when driving from Sunrise. It is in a little L shaped shopping center, and faces the road.

I remember someone here saying that the MegaWalmart carries it sometimes. Also I rememeber someone saying that some of the Hispanic grocery stores carry it for making tamales. I of course could be incorrect as to it purpose.

You can order Mrs, Wages online, like $16 for a case (that includes shipping). I have a case if anyone wants me to bring some to the meeting.

Hey Marc, I like to try a box/bag (16oz?). Just so happens I ran out of Kalk the other day. I was thinking about trying Randy's recipie for two-part,but Dow Flake is a bit hard to come by out here in the West.

I have a question. If you have a calcium reactor, do you still need Kal to raise Alk and PH? I used to do 2 parts but would like to set up the calcium reactor. I thought the calcium reactor will take care the job and you dont need to add any Kalk. is it true? Thanks

Tony

Depends on the system and your tank demands. I know people that get by with just the Calcium Reactor, and other that use the Calcium Reactor to meet Calcium demands, and the Kalkwasser reactor to meet alkalinity demands.

You can get "CAL" at mexican food stores. It is used for making tortillas. I get mine from a place here in Roseville for ~$1.50 per pound.
It has been working great for for me for over 6 months.

Not that I can tell. I am fairly certain it is the same stuff.
You've seen my tank, I don't think there are any growth problems, do you? ;)
