looking into getting a 1gallon for work (zoos and maybe a sexy shrimp if possible). i've seen this setup at petco for 25 bucks, wondering if anyone else has one (if you do what wattage is the lamp that comes with it, is the filter any good?) or can recommend a similar setup that comes with filtration and lighting.

I don't have a pico, but alot of the threads I've read on them always mention evaporation concerns. Most don't use an open top to help slow evaporation/salinity changes. I couldn't get the first link to work but the second one looked like it had a fully open top.

I would get something a bit bigger such as a 2.5 gallon glass tank. It gives you a little more room then the other tanks you mentioned but still qualifies as a pico tank. I had a 2.5g tank running for 4-5 months and I really enjoyed having the tank. I used a 18watt PC light and I was able to successfully keep Zoas, and Mushrooms. I ran the tank open top but found that setting up a simple DIY auto Topoff worked great in keeping evaporation and salinity swings in check.

Hope this helps.

how big was the footprint on that tank? i dont have very much space at all to be putting a tank on my desk, just thought i could have a peice of the reef w/ me at work everyday

Go with the 3 gal version

Go with the 3 gal version

I have the 3 gal version of the Tom's tank you speak of. I am not familiar with the filter and lighting of the 1 gal, but the 2 and 3 are both pretty much set to use out of the box. The 3 gal dimensions are L 12 7/16", W 9 10/16", H 7 4/16"(11 6/16" with light).

The light is 50/50 14,000K actinic and 7,400K natural(terminology?)

The HOB filter is completely silent and has 2 spaces for inserts, one for biologicals and one for carbon. The only disadvantage I have seen is that the places that have the kit have not started carrying replacement filters or lights yet.

I think they are a very new product. It isn't even on the company website yet. I found them at Petland and at Pet Supermarket, but neither has a shop online site. The US distributor of Tom Aquatic is Oscar Enterprises and their site is http://www.oscarent.com/

You can email them and they will tell you where to find products in your area. I am waiting for the email for stores near me that have the replacement carbon filter inserts.

They said their website is being updated and the deco kits will be on there very soon.

@joewhitefish: is there a picture of the 3 gal you have on that website, i cant find it. have you had any problems with yours? what all are you keeping in there?
