they have been doing it for a while now they call it the Diver Den have some good stuff sometimes but mainley just Hype IMO and offer no information other then size and name no care info. guess they probably say if one ask.. oh well! :strooper:
Does anyone know if the Giant Balanos and/or the Mini Balanos sold by CaptiveReef would be okay in reef tank temperatures (mine is usually around 70 - 80 degrees, but sometimes gets to 81 or so)??? I've read they have to be fed and require special lighting and started wondering if they REQUIRE a temperate tank too!
Thanks, that is what I was afraid of! For those of you keeping them successfully (especially with long-term success) do you have normal reef temps or cooler tanks? I'm especially interested in the Balanos and Dendros (should have plenty of food from a 100 gallon refugium and a DSB for them)- but we don't want to put animals into an environment they can't adapt to/thrive in!

I also have a colony of the Balano from Mike... I feed them Cyclopeeze, Mysis, and squid rotating throughout the week... they thrive about 14" under my high lighting and my temps are usually 78-80

Hey plaz. First, good job for doing your homework on them before getting any.
As for lighting, they are non-photosynthetic so it doesn't matter, but I notice in my wife's tank they open up larger in the day. That tank is lit by PC's, so it seems like very intense light might discourage them from opening a bit (anyone else notice this?). Feeding them in the middle of the day trains them to be open too (someone else posted about this and it's true).
The temps in her tank are 78-82.
They actually need to eat meaty foods, IOW - you have to actively feed them. We feed our dendros at least once a day, sometimes twice. Mainly with squid.

For you guys who were commenting on Live Aquaria above, you shouldn't be so fast to hammer them. It's been around for a while everything is WYSIWYG. They get some really nice stuff, especially fish. I have bought from it before and everything was exactly as shown, and the prices are usually right with the market.
I wish MORE of the 'big guys' would think this way, wouldn't hurt the LFS to catch on too. I can see why some of the small specialty vendors would feel threatened a little, but the big guys will never have that kind of custom tailored selection and there will always be a place for it.

Thanks Mothra! We feed our fish a meaty mush that is mainly squid and vitamins every other day (and they have gracilaria anytime they want it). If I target the individual polyps on those days do you think that would be enough along with the DSB and refugium (refugium is designed mainly for copepods to keep the mandarins fat)?
Note: I would also watch them and if they are not visibly thriving I could try one of those feeder hoods (upside down coke bottle) to feed them without the Tangs and others taking it away from the.

thats what I like to do.. I give them the food and cover them cuz my fish will steal the food.
