A reply on basics of the reef exhibit from Jahmar Hannans:

Mr. Davis,

This is in response to your inquiry about our Tropical Diver Gallery. I hope these are the answers you were looking for!

1.) Photoperiod of the halides? The sequence starts at 7:00 am and ends at 9:30 pm. Lights are full up by 9:00 am and are turning off starting at 8:00 pm. This sequence result is 12 hours of full light with lower light levels for one hour on each end for a 14 hour total.

2.) Target temperature of the reef? Target temperature range is 24-26 degrees C (75 to 78 F) average is 25 C (77 F).

3.) Specific salinity of the reef? Salinity (measured in parts per thousand) range 33-35 ppt (Specific gravity of 1.023 to 1.025 roughly)

4.) Any type of moonlight simulation used? The skylight provides much of our moonlight. We can simulate a brighter moon if necessary by adding more lighting from the work areas or deck walkway, but nothing other than ambient light from the emergency lighting system is used at this time.

5.) What is the Kelvin temperature of metal halide bulbs? We use all metal halides. The ones up high above the dump buckets are 2000 watt and 6500 Kelvin. The ones on the sides of the tank are 1000 watt and mixed between 6500k (while to yellow) and 14000k ( more blue color)

How do they get their flow in the main reef display? Is it all from the surge tanks?

Very cool!

This picture is VERY KEWL, I haven't been there yet, it makes me wanna go see it BAD!!! Thanks for sharing this picture!! :)

We spent several hours there. You can spend that amount of time easily. We already had our tickets, so that line was shorter. The walk up ticket line wait was probably 10 minutes or so.

The tables you see are not real. The reef structure is built around a faux coral type skeleton. The large orange monti caps are real.
