I just got this brain coral. It is my first coral. Let me know what you guys think. I have him under metal halides and it looks like he isnt fully expanding. Should I only turn on one bulb and place him away from it so he gets ambient light not direct light?

Make sure you acclimate him to the new lights. What lighting was he under and what lighting do you have?

He was under MH and VHO. When my lights go on I am going to try and move him to a shadier spot. Thanks for the comment.

I belive also that the red brains are generally used to a lower light where as the greens come from a stronger area of light. hope this helps

nice! It's definitely contracted, which isn't uncommon for small or new acquisitions. The red ones definitely prefer lower lighting. Once it settles in and starts inflating it'll probably look similar to this one I have:

What do you reccommend I feed him. Shrimp, Silverfish? I have fine invert food that you put in the water also.

Just an update. It looked like it was expanding which was great but now it is back to normal. I heard they can do that to get sand off or something?

i feed mine a piece about a quarter inch of silversides a week and then when ever he catches mysis when i feed my fish. hes healthy and always inflated

Try putting some small pellet food like Spectrum directly on the oral disk with a turkey baster. That way you can feed the coral without polluting your entire water column like those liquid goops do.

That is a very nice red trachy. I have had a few and find they retract like that when they are getting bothered by other fish.

I feed mine cyclopeez mixed with a liquid invert food and mysis shrimp.

They definately like lower lighting as they are collected deep.

Well him and a fire shrimp are the only things in the tank. My tank has ich so the fish wont be in for another month.

Seapug- Yours looks like a Wellsophyllia. Ryan's is a Trachyphyllia. His will not get very fleshy. By the looks of the second picture I would say that the flesh is almost completely extended.

I have a green single mouth one like ryan and it get big when fully inflated. Very flesy and almost double the size. If the reds inflate like the greens, then his should get bigger. However, with that said, people are usually surprised by how big mine will get so I may have just gotten lucky.
