Pics of my weird plumbing

yeah those adaptors are hard to come by. They didn't have them at Home Depot. I'm still stuck deciding on Mag 7 vs Eheim 1260. Mag 7 would be waaaay less, but I'm wondering if the Mag 9 has heat issues, the Mag 7 might too. But the Eheim is like twice the price.

Eheim is quieter, and less prone to leaks if you want to run external.

Actually if you run external, you reject heat to the air rather than the water, so that might help you too.

That said, I'm running Mags because I was cheap when I first set up :)

I kinda want to switch to Eheim. Probably will try to find a used one.

Why exactly do you want to switch to Eheim? Have you had any problems with your mag and which mag are you using?

I don't really want to switch, but I would if I got one cheap.

Only because it would be a little quieter, and I could run it external without wondering if the impeller housing was going to spring a leak.

I have Mag7's and 5's running right now. No real problems with them.

The OceanRunner pump is between the two as far as price goes. Uses the least amount of watts of all three pumps. I'm happy with mine and its quiet.

I just plugged in the Eheim 1260, the Mag wasn't very loud, but this thing is near silent. Let's hope my temp drops to about 77 and stays there so I don't need my heater =). Also transferred some more of my rock, some mushroom corals, and old tank water. Adding the first fish as well. Wish me luck.

Any updates on tank temp.. It's been warm in SF eh...

I did an unofficial test last nite.. I have my 45g brute container filled with ro water and was just going to let it mix overnite with my mag 18 water change pump for circulation.. The water started out at 68 degrees last nite, ambient temp in the room was 78 and I turned the pump on around 3am.. I checked it this morning at 10:30 and the water temp was 82-83.... I didn't think it would be that drastic to tell you the truth.. The mag is running with 0 head loss in the container.. No tubing is connected to it...

Temp update for you. It's still at 79.5 but yes it is really warm in SF today and I haven't turned my Halides on yet. It was at 79.9 at 2am last night.

Not sure if the Eheim is still heating the tank or if it's just taking a very long time to cool down.

In all honesty after thinking about the amount of flow I have, I might even change my return pump out to an Eheim 1250. With head loss it will be pumping 217gph. That's near 3x flow of my display, and might be better all around. Less micro bubbles, not as much current through my sump, more efficient skimming, less energy consumption. Now all I would need is to find an adaptor to go from .5 to .75. That should be fun...

I have the adapters if you need them.. Just let me know what the .5" fititings is.. Is the pump female or male threads.. If its male it'll be easy to just get a 1/2"x3/4" threaded reducer bushing.. They cost about $1.29 at most plumbing supply places.. If its all slip they make half by three quarter hose barb adapter fittings as well...
\
I'm a big fan of the low flow through the sump then increasing flow with the use of powerheads.. The efficiency of the new prop style powerheads make it much more energy efficient than a big closed loop..

Yeah, my new hydors work great and use almost no electricity. I think when the stores open tomorrow I'm going to go trade in my pump again. If the 1250 is like the 1260, the top of the pump has a female threaded outake that connects with a piece they give you. The piece is male threaded/ .75 hose barb.

Where would you recommend I go look for an adaptor in San Francisco? Not too familiar with plumbing specialty stores. If I can't find anything I might have to see if you have it. Thanks.

Out here in the eastbay the only place that carries them is past time hardware.. You might try calling the urban farmer in the sunset.. So the 1250 you are going to get is only .5" You can get a .5" nipple with the .5x.75" threaded reducer bushing.. They you can get a female threaded by hosebarb fitting in .75" to thread on to the bushing.. It'll be super easy.. I think I have the parts laying around here as well.. The nipple and bushing should be easy to get at most hardware stores.. Cal steam off of mariposa street will have the parts as well.. I'm not sure about the hosebarb fitting though.. The OSH out here also has them...

Here a pic is worth a thousand words.. I only had a 90 degree hose barb fitting but I have straight ones as well somewhere here..

oooOoOOo =). As long as the 1250 is like the 1260 but 1 size smaller that would be perfect. I think I'd need the straight one to fit in to my tubing. It's not all that flexible.

I got confirmation today that OSH off of westborough and gellert just pass serramonte on south bound 280 has the hosebarb fittings as well. They should also have the bushings and adapters you need.. Just make sure that the eheim has a standard national pipe thread and not some weird metric thread...

cool. Thanks a lot. I will go check it out tomorrow.

Did you see my new thread? Just got home a bit ago and my fish cuaght ich. Just what I needed...

Went to 4 different stores today but I finally got all the pieces I need for a .5 threaded to .75 hose barb. Going to swap my eheim 1260 for a Eheim 1250 tomorrow. Flow through my sump will be about 217gph and 3 times my tank is 225pgh. I think it will work out good and my skimmer will perform better.

By the way, after adding my rock and coral to the tank, the skimmer is starting to get some nice brown stuff. Should only get better.
