ktnjer,

I would recommend picking up a copy of Marine Fishes (A Pocket Expert Guide) by Scott W. Michael. It's a good book, and will help prevent any questionable impulse purchases or helps out when a store doesn't provide an adequate recommendation. I know it has for me at least...

According to the Harlequin Sweetlips Entry:
Maximum Length: 28.3
Minimum Tank Size: 175-200 gals.
Rating: Difficult to Feed as Juvies, and a semi-delicate species

Cayenne,

Thanks much...I will go to Amazon right now and see if I can get this book fairly cheap.

Does it give compatibility charts and overall info on fish and other critters?

Is this the one?

Hey J that is a great book but you are right on doing your own evaluation. A book will say not reef safe just because the fish will eat fan worms and some inverts. People thought that I was crazy for placing triggers in my reef tank many many years ago. I had looked at that fish when I first started because of how is swims and color pattern. A panther grouper is a sweet looking fish when it is 2" but get big fast and eats a lot. I don't think that everyone is trying to bash you. A sweet looking fish that is not normally kept in a reef system. I hope he does good for you.

Yep, that's the book. They have an identical one for inverts as well... As Ade mentioned you have to take the reef compatibility rating with a grain of salt. Every fish has it's own personality, some may be problematic, some may be fine.

The best use of a book like that is to be able to do quick spot checks on temperament, compatibility, and maximum size.

Oh I didn't think you guys were bashing at all...I take alot of things with a grain of salt usually. I am usually at the fish store for maybe an hour or more before I make any choices because i like to study the patterns of the fish i usually want.

Its like they say pistol shrimp and gobies have that symbiotic relationship....well i got both and the goby goes nowhere near the shrimp. Rather odd I find the hippo tang and the 6 line hang out with the pistol alot under his rock.

I guess that book would come in handy for determining size and what not of certain fish...but if i get one and he just doesn't fit the environment, i give him to someone who will take care of him. I believe my spotted Mandarin still lives at mike's house to this day.

I do know one thing....no Damsels for me!

The wife just took a shot of the tank a while ago and got some rather great pics....
