picture of blueline sore on top fin

I just email the guy I got him from so I will see if he stands behind his fish. my kid used to hand feed him in the QT so he will be upset . thank god I did not throw him in the display .

That really sucks, I'm sorry :(

+1 to what Humblefish said. I believe by doing a series of FW dips you can also deal with flukes that Prazi has no effect on.

Flukes...on fish from NYA? You don't say.

I have had my own trial and tribulations with NYA's "healthy livestock". Needless to say I haven't ordered since end of 2012.

Be prepared for the following:
1- Possibly get store credit in which you are forced to buy more unhealthy fish.

2- Have the owner blame you and your QT, and/or practices of handling the fish while in your QT.

3- Denial on their part that the fish was sick when it was bagged and sent out. He only "sells fish that he would put in his own tank".

4- Several people to come and defend NYA and state that they get nothing but healthy fish from them.

Good luck, I know the feeling of losing some pricey fish over the years..

BTW, the sore is a viral infection. I have seen the same type of infection on some diver direct fish also (Bandit Angels). Antibiotics would have done nothing to help it. Most likely it was kept in less than prisitine holding system while at the wholesaler or vendor and that lowered the fish's immunity to fight off such an infection.

If you do a google search you will find mixed reviews on this company. I think people tend to buy from him because his prices are cheaper. My advice is never to buy cheap fish and never to buy from a company that only gives store credit. Just my policy. YMMV.

To the original poster, so sorry for your loss.

Dominic- Sorry for your loss.

snorvich- Agree. I did my research on NYA only after I found my self consistently getting blantantly infested and sick fish from them. I was getting stuck with store credit that I didn't want to be forced to use to buy more sick fish. I had a colorful back and forth with Michael regarding the livestock I was receiving. Needless to say he blamed me for the losses. That was until I offered to post pics of the sick fish that were photographed right out of the shipping bags. I am always a bit shocked wen I see several people on these forums state that they have received nothing but healthy livestock. I envy their luck. I have heard successful stories of those that have actually befriended him and have been allowed to hand pick livestock. I have to admit though, if NYA was my LFS, I would still get fish from him as long as I could see them and make sure they were healthy before purchasing.

Bottom line is I only order from LiveAquaria now, and I am never disappointed.

No. It would have confirmed flukes, however, and then there are various treatments which are highly effective. I think (to be blunt) that the fish was not healthy to start with.

I am kind of in the same situation, so thats why I asked.

have an angel, something was eating its fins and tail !

I thought bacteria infection ... but did a freshwater dips, and millions of flukes fell off .. I then started Prazi pro. I waited a week before doing the second, and they came back at eating the fins again [the fins did grow back in 2 weeks a bit]
not I am doing the second round of PP ... but doesnt seem like flukes falling off !

should I try metro next ?

the fish did poop white stingi stuff, which is now gone and he now poops normal ... so I guess PP worked on that ? or too early to tell ?

so now I was thinking maybe Id be better off doing weekly FW dips as well ...

id have to try PP another round and let this round finish before being able to conclude it did not work ... but just thinking ahead for now.

so would doing freshwater dips on weekly basis have helped in this case ?

I have received fish that had obvious fluke and I dosed to Prazi, Metro, and still did FW baths every 3 days. Those fish are still alive and are in my current FOWLR years later. No, FW dip doesn't completely solve the issue, but it certainly helps in combination with proper medication. I also add an antibiotic (Erythromycin) into the mix.

never had luck with antibiotics ... so instead I run UV [after treatments] and keep the QT super clean ... maybe I should try mixing in some EM though

Metro is for internal stomach "bugs" :)

I have had luck when I dose Metro into the water and put it in the frozen food. It is extremely bitter for fish, so I had to use a product from Seachem that masks the flavor of the med.

yes I know, I saw one from API that mixed metro with prazi ingredient ... thats what I meant.

I will continue with weekly dips and PP treatments, hope they go away.

ya he came in like that with the sore . I ordered a 5 inch and was sent a 8to 9 inch which is not cool. I only have a 30 gal qt so I was doing a lot more water changes .I am sticking to seeing what I am buying from now on.

If you don't mind me asking, why weekly FW dips? Is the fish too weak to make it through more dips in a shorter time span?

I meant more like a FW dip every three days to manage the flukes while arranging an alternative treatment. If prazi isn't working, dips need to be performed to control the adult fluke population.

Jnc, thanks for the viral diagnosis.

Dominic, did you email NYA at the time the fish arrived about the size discrepancy and sore? Hope you can get something worked out, but as others have said, I avoid NYA because this seems standard from that vendor..

no I did not say anything about the size what would he do say send it back and I have no means to do that . i thanked him because it was a big fat fish i thought was healthy till i saw the sore after the email i sent that day.
the size did not bother me that much as i have a big tank he was going in .but dam when i started looking at him in the 30 gallon i was more upset he had to be in there for 8 weeks .
but when you say 5-6 inches you should not send a fish almost double that .

after reading the sticky Steve linked to, I see its better to do it every 3 days ?

Dominic really sorry for the loss and hope u get something ... and sorry for hijacking the thread !
