Pinched Mantle Disease

Does this clam have pinched mantle and if so what do I do about it?

I was going to say the same thing--it just looks as though its retracted its mantle on the left side--normal

I'm don't think you can tell from the picture but the clam does not open fully and is actually mostly closed. Can't even see the inlet or outlet of the clam, but mantle is not fully retracted. Has been this way for about a week now and does not seem to be getting harassed by anything.

the clam shows no symptoms of "pinched mantle".

why dont you tell us how long you've had the clam, what fish you have. tell us about your tank, lighting, filtration and results from every test kit you have.

Pinched mantle is thought to be a microbial infection (or possibly parasitic) which leads to a wasting of the clam and mantle, as the clam pinches up and pieces of tissue float away. It could also be an apoptotic autoimmune response stimulated by stressful aquarium conditions. In fact, I'm not sure if anyone has discovered or cultured the causative agent. Pinched mantle leaves scar marks that could be mistaken for bite marks. I believe people have tried freshwater and iodine dips, as well as antibiotic therapy with little luck.

This clam does not have pinched mantle or you would notice pieces of the mantle slowly dissolving away over the period of a week or two. In those places of "infection" the clam exhibits localized mantle retraction which looks like pinching.

the cause of pinched mantle is a Perkinsus. It has been IDed, is being cultured and a cure/treatment is being worked on right now.

i dont know where you heard anything about tissue breaking up and floating away or scar marks?

there are a few simple treatments right now that seem to reverse the condition but nothing i would consider a cure
