First things first - 30g tank, 78F, 1.026 sg, 0 ammonia, nitrites, >5 nitrates, 10 dKh, 430 Ca, 1350 mag. 2x Current Orbit @ 80% blues, 75% whites from 8am to 4pm.
That said, I am having issues keeping pink birdsnest! At first I thought it was the frag (small little 1x1" frag)- the first one had been shipped Priority Mail and took 2 days to get here, so I figured it was overly stressed and wouldn't open. The first few days turned into two weeks that I didn't see any polyps, then it started turning white from the bottom. Moved it around to different areas of flow and light, cut the skeleton off and remounted it to no avail. Once it started going, it took three days before it was gone. Chalked it up to "some make it, some don't".
Now, I have an awesome colony of green birdsnest that has exploded over the last two months. I have fragged it a few times, and the frags have grown really well, easily doubling in size since cut as little as 1 month ago. The above frag sat right next to the green until I started moving it when it started fading. This is why I assumed it was the frag - if one birdsnest colony is taking off in one area, another should too, right?
Flash forward, recently I was in my LFS and found a good looking colony of pink birdsnest that, lo and behold, was sitting right next to green birdsnest. So as my daughters like the pink stuff, I figured I would try again. Brought it home, temp acclimated, dipped it, turned the lights off and adjusted down for the next day, and it was in the tank 45 minutes after leaving the LFS sitting right next to my green birdsnest. Three days later this one has not extended either. :headwally:
Is there something I'm missing here? I cannot find where the care requirements are any different between the two, but one withers while the other takes off under the exact same conditions with the same placement. Or am I jumping the gun here and need to wait this one out?
