Pink Birs Nest Problem

I noticed that my pink birdsnest (Brian Species) is having some growth problems. It is really starting to thicken up in the branches but not growing in length.

Then Today noticed some small round balls of growth in the branches that remind me of bubble coral and they seem to move with the water flow or maybe wiggle is a better term. Any idea what those are, sorry but my camera and the operator are not the best :).

Thats pretty strange looking, dont know what to tell you about the bubbles. The coral looks like its struggling though, I see a lot of TN at the base.

My pink bird seems to grow pretty thick because of high flow. Thats about all the useful info I have for this thread :p

Thanks Chuck, and the TN just started in the last couple of days, but the whole thing is getting some good flow.

I've had similar bubbles on acros (not as wavy, though) that I just called blisters. Some sort of stressor caused them, but they eventually went away. Is something picking on it? Looks like the dead section is near an overhang (that monti), so if none of the fish watch for a night visitor?

Norm - Very strange. I've seen it grow looser and tighter depending on flow, but have not had blisters on it (I had a monti that did once as well and it eventually popped and went away). Not sure what happened to it in that situation either.

You say it is getting plenty of flow, it isn't by chance close to where you're dosing things that it is getting a blast full of kalk or two part every once in a while?

They deal with low light pretty well (not sure what you're running, but it has clearly grown a bit since you got it from me) so I'd doubt that would be the reason for it TNing underneath and in that case I'd start to agree with Gary.

On the upside, you should be able to easily get another one if it conks out on you :) ...and without having to pull one out of the ocean.

Brian, all dosing is done in the sump and I run a TEK 8 bulb T5 unit for lights, and tested water and all is normal, and all the other corals are doing excellent, so far. Hopefully you are right and it will just run a course and get back to looking normal or else I will be running to you for another piece:)

Gary, I guess blisters wold be a good description of them and the only thing new recently is some new food that I mixed up myself, mostly white fish, shrimp and some brine shrimp, garlic water and selcon. I will say it got the skimmer excited, but I over fed the new food the first time I put it in. Thanks for the reply and I'll watch for something picking on it.

A lot of times I hate to recommend trying to dip an already stressed coral unless you know what the problem is and know that the dip will fix it, but you may try dipping it if you can't find something munching it.

FWIW, mine is doing something very similar, but without the blisters and RTN. Ultimately it has just changed shape. Is it normal for it to get thicker in lower flow? I've got decently flow in my tank, but I've got a feeling not as much as you guys, Brian. :)

It is growing much thicker and tighter in this tank (more flow and more light) than it used to in my other tank (lower flow area with less light). When you got it from me it was probably growing thinner and not as tight, so its possible you've actually got it in more flow/light than I did. I think this mirrors what I remember of c_stowers' as well. He didn't get his from me, but he did have his in higher light and flow than I did and it was growing really tight.

It is going to be a bear to frag the next time I do and I'm getting slightly worried it will start to die in the middle if I let it get too big because it can't get enough flow to the core. We shall see.
