Pinpoint salinity meter vs refractometer

I just read through the tech manual for that one. It does look like an excellent choice! More controls than the Orion 128 that I use.

I don't recommend crap Randy..

Usually  But glad you still read through it :)

Boomer,

If I read the manual right for the Oakton ® Acorn TM CON 6 Conductivity Meter I will need to purchase some 100 ms calibration fluid to calibrate for seawater correct? Thanks.

I have a pinpoint salinity monitor and hate it.

The readings are always all over the map.
Use a 9v battery, instead of the adapter :D

Try measuring it away from your lights. Some meters suffer from electrical interference.

How much do you see the values vary after waiting a few minutes for temperature equilibration?
It turned out that it was just interference from the light hood. My new complaint about my Pinpoint monitor is that new 9v batteries only last a week. Ah, I guess I'm hard to please but I'll be buying some rechargeable 9vs this weekend.

No automatic conversion to ppt or specific gravity

No automatic conversion to ppt or specific gravity

I can't believe that someone would create a digital meter without built in conversion to ppt or specific gravity.

I personally wouldn't want that unless I knew exactly what the conversion was that they were using. Some of the devices that reefers use (refractometers, digital density meters, even hydrometers) around actually use incorrect conversions, and so provide worse data that way. Since the actual thing being measured is conductivity, I'd rather see the raw data. But I can see how many people would prefer to see it processed for them.

Randy, as usuall you forced me to put my thinking cap on. :hmm4:

I don't know why I was thinking it was just a straightforward linear function. Probably because I had just looked at the conversion chart published by pinpoint.

What I should really do is just change my thinking, and my target range to msiemens.

Thanks
