$300-400 has been the going rate online. What is a good typical price for a really nice one? My lfs just got one in that they are holding for me. Very tempting.
As a Cirrhilabrus, they do NOT sleep in the sand and will be active throughout the daylight period. If it's hiding, there's a reason; typically being bullied. Also, do these guys typically like to hide, bury themselves in the sand, or are they more so out and about? If I'm going to spend this much on the fish, I would prefer that it would be visible.
+1 from experiance early on.Your tank must be COMPLETELY covered with 1/4" mesh or the like, and it needs to be fed 2-3 times/day.
Now I'm really upset...apparently my LFS sold me 'cheap' fish...I paid way less than $500 for 2 pairs!

Go return them, they are cheap knock offs. I bought my Christmas Island emperor from the same place and of I posted the price people wouldn't believe it. As I said before DD is extremely overpriced and their QT is no different than your average LFS.
DD has no Real QT procedure at all. Let's get this straightened out to begin with. Most people read that they QT and are happy about this, but in reality they don't have a true QT procedure. What they do is take new fish put them directly into the system with the old fish, that are "in QT" as you know that is not how you QT fish. This is also what a typical LFS does. DD will not sell you sick or ones that don't eat either. Well you can go to a Lfs and watch a fish and see if it is sick or eating. As for DD being overpriced YES it is. I can go to a dozen Lfs in my area and get the same fish cheaper that are QTed the same exact way. As for high end fish, there are 5 Lfs that carry the pintails right now as I speak and not one has had one listed for over 300. The Japanese crescent tails are 300 right now around me. I paid 250 for my diamond tail flasher as well. DD had them at over 300. Also the fact that DD is mainly supplied by Quality Marien as well as most of the Lfs in my area, I would say that there is a big difference in prices. The Lfs are usually cheaper, I mean one place sells the Juvi Chevrons and Achilles for 100, while DD sells them for well over 200.Perhaps you and I have a different definition of the word extremely. The store where they are listed cheaply is a great find, but really more of an aberration than the norm when it comes to pricing, and they have absolutely no quarantine procedures to speak of.
Diver's Den pricing is pretty average compared to most LFS particularly when comparing "high end" livestock.
You are fortunate to be able to find a store that sells them at the low price, but as they dont ship and the OP lives nowhere particularly near that store, DD pricing is pretty fair.
back on topic .....here is a photo of the pintail. Thoughts?
Here's mine: beautiful fish. Hopefully mine will grow up big and strong like that one!
That is the one at my LFS
Just pd $200
