It depends on the species. Some, like the blue stripe pipefish, have tiny serrations on the snout of the males. Some are impossible to sex based on secondary sex characteristics. Do you know the species you're trying to figure out?
Umm, its brown and striped. Was hoping to find a mate for it. We caught it on a fishing trip here in SWest FL. Was hoping to identify the sex so we could work on a pair.
you probably have a gulf pipe. i have no practical experience with that particular pipe, but IIRC, the males are a bit larger and less round...concave-ish in the "lower" belly where they carry the eggs.
