Pipefish Babies!

Just got the parents in November. This is their second batch. Their are only five babies that came out this time, swam to the top, and then swam back down past all of the fish. Then fathers pouch is still large so he will probably have more tonight. Pics were taken in a plastic shot glass.

I'm not sure on the exact species. They are from the Carribean. I got the parents from CCritters for $8. The parents started eating frozen the first day I got them.

The ones from ccritters.com look like the vertical swimming, slow type of pipe. Are they like that? DO the babies act like that? They look like that are acting like dragonfaces....cute though :D

They slither along the bottom just like dragonfaces. The one pipe is about 5 inches long and the other is about 7. I let that baby back into the tank after I took the picture. Today when the lights turned on, I saw three tiny babies in the tank right by the mother. There are plenty of places to hide, but I don't know if they will live.

When the parents come out in the open, I will try to take a picture to show you them. I was just watching the babies, and at one time they would all get up and swim against the slow current and basically just float there. When a predator, like one of the black mollies, would swim by, they would drop to the bottom and stop moving. I have seen six of the babies.

Neat! swimming against the current allows them to eat plankton w/o much effort and then if a predator comes by they hide! They must come out pretty well developed! I hope they do get to adult sizes
