Placement of Zoos

Lots of great responses here for different lights, where to put zoas. I appreciate everyone's comments...I am going to be upgrading from PC to T5's soon, and may have to move some zoas down in the water column.

Hi.

I have 55g tank (24 depth) and I have 96W T5 (2x actinic and 2x blue).
Now I have 3 zoas - orange, green and purple hornet.
Do I need more light or its gonna be fine?

Thanks,

Seems this is as good input as you can get, to me. Around here, I've been taught acclimating them to your tank parameters is the second step after inspecitng them for problems. The next step is acclimating them to your lighting and currents. Getting them in the tank and safely into the bottom and then rest while they open up, then moving them up in the tank to places you like and watching to see how they adjust. If they do, great--- if not, time to figure if it's lighting, flow or a problem you missed.

It's great for people that have years of experience to draw on their past and be able to place orange here and blue there. Being new, we need a way to make that learning curve happen, trial and error. On top of that, our tanks each being unique, we'll be next to say, here's what happens in my tank.... your experience may vary...:)

That does seem to sum it all up. There really is no scientific answer to this question. You can't really start with saying I have "X" lights in "Y"size tank where do I put "A,B, and C" and expect a definate answer.

Where I put my zoas in my tank will be different then everyone elses because I have different water quality, inhabitants, temp, filtration, flow strength/direction, feeding regiments, and most importantly is that my colony is not likely the same one you have, they are living animals that will have their own "personality" for lack of a better word.

Really all you can do is take the advice from the experienced reefers and use that as a good starting point to look at and probably minimize the work required to find the right spot that makes that zoa happy. IMO the bigest part of this hobby is studying your animals and getting to know them and what is right for them to thrive, its part of the husbandry... you can expect that someone else will set it up for you and be done with it.

Anyone have experience with zoos with LED lighting? I found some beautiful watermelon, spiderman, and joker zoos. After 2 days They are opening up nicely on the bottom of my 12gal fluval edge. Just wanna hear other experiences if this is or isn't a good idea...

i usually keep my blues and purples down low, green and orange at the middle range, and pink, yellow up top. Iv had pretty good success with this rough configurment in regards to open heads and growth! also iv found that keeping the water a bit warmer also helped.

I have zoas at the tippy top all the way to the bottom. I have a 45 pillar thats 28" high with LEDs. Up high are rastas and some pinks and they open fully everyday. Bottom are some purple deaths and Pink Palys.

That being said my LEDs are only at 50% right now as I added some SPS and I'm readjusting the whole tank.

I keep mine at the bottom of the tank, but I am running MH and a lot of it, for size of tank. Trial and error is the best way to figure it out. Common sense helps as well. Try to mimic the conditions that they were in a store at first.
