Planing a pipe fish/mangrove/planted tank

I am planing a pipe fish tank.

The area I have to use is 15x14 inches and the tank needs to be about 18 inches tall because I am thinking of having it overflow into my main tank and 10gallon sump. The tank will be a custom acrylic.

What I really want is to have mangroves in this tank so I need a dsb and an open top. I was thinking that for lighting I would use a 150wat MH suspended over the tank about 2ft.
Because pipe fish jump I will have a clear mesh guard around the tank.

Because of the dsb the total swimming area of the tank will be about 10gallons.I am planning on the tank not only having mangroves but being a marine "planted" with Lr rubble "pod piles" in the corners. The tank will also be dosed with photo. To feed pods. There is also a possibility of having a 10gallon sump just for this tank too.

For fish I am interested in a pair of Many banded pipe fish but if there is a pipe better suited then I will go with that.

Is there any thing wrong with what I am planning? Tank to small, fish to big.........

This tank is only being planed right now and can not be set up till mid summer.

IMO, a tank 15" x 14" is too small for banded pipes which reach about 6" in length. There certainly wouldn't be much horizontal swimming room at all for them. The tank may hold 10 gal, but the dimensional footprint size is smaller than a 10 gal.

I believe true dwarf pipes or pug-nose pipes stay around 3" in length and IMO would be more suitable for such a small tank. However, they are certainly not as colorful as banded pipes.

Best of luck with whatever you choose. And welcome to the syngnathid hobby!

Thank you for your input Reefnut.
After taking a look at dwarf pipes i have to say i rather like them. They have a camo look to them that will go well with the tank if i can find them for sale.

Bluestripe pipes would also work. They're pretty hardy and widely available, too. I love their little Batman tail flags.
