First time reefer, and my tank is about 8 weeks old. Late last night with dark room and tank on low light, I was staring at the clear water admiring how 3D the fish looked with the lights so low, as if I could reach out and touch them. You couldn't tell there was glass or water. Then all of a sudden BOOM there were what I assume to be some type of plankton in the hundreds that just appeared out of nowhere (really think they came in from the sump via return pump). My fish woke up and started going after them like crazy. This is not an event I had expected, and within 5 minutes they were all eaten or filtered out. Too small for me to ID, just specks but you could tell they were mobile and zig zagging on their own.
I'm sure this is a great free food source to have happen, but I was surprised as I had not really noticed anything growing in the sump or anywhere. Is this extremely common or did I just get lucky? How often should I expect it?
Happy Thanksreefing!!!
