Planning a SH Tank - Critique My Setup!

I have a 54g corner bowfront. It is 22 or 23" deep. It is not drilled and is currently setup as a freshwater tank with a good canister filter. It also has about 130w PC lights.

I am really thinking of making this tank sort of a refugium in itself - plenty of macro algae and possibly a deep sand bed. Then I will use my canister with filter floss for mechanical filtration and provide some flow in the tank. It has a spray bar.

What are thoughts on the deep sand bed as it pertains to a horse tank?

For stocking, I was thinking of about 50lbs of live rock, 4-6 tankbred SH's, a pair of tank raised pipefish, Bangaii Cardinals (whatever the preferred number is..I forget..). I looked through that Tankmates link and picked out things that were in the 0-1 Risk ranking. There was a goby or two I liked as well as Peppermint Shrimp.

In my 220g tank, I have a very large Sinularia, huge Devil's Hand, and a large Toadstool. So I'll likely take 1-2 of those and put in there...most likely the Sinularia and Devil's Hand. I really like soft corals, so I will probably stick with just a couple large/showpiece soft corals and possibly some Zoas.

Thoughts on this?

Sounds good.... however, there are no captive bred pipefish commercially available in the US. So, skip the pipes unless you can find a private breeder that has had success breeding on a small scale.

I like the idea of a large (at least half the size of the main tank) fuge with a deep sand bed. I have kept several similar setups for years and wouldnt do it any other way.

Why use a canister filter instead of a sumped system though?
