I have a 54g corner bowfront. It is 22 or 23" deep. It is not drilled and is currently setup as a freshwater tank with a good canister filter. It also has about 130w PC lights.
I am really thinking of making this tank sort of a refugium in itself - plenty of macro algae and possibly a deep sand bed. Then I will use my canister with filter floss for mechanical filtration and provide some flow in the tank. It has a spray bar.
What are thoughts on the deep sand bed as it pertains to a horse tank?
For stocking, I was thinking of about 50lbs of live rock, 4-6 tankbred SH's, a pair of tank raised pipefish, Bangaii Cardinals (whatever the preferred number is..I forget..). I looked through that Tankmates link and picked out things that were in the 0-1 Risk ranking. There was a goby or two I liked as well as Peppermint Shrimp.
In my 220g tank, I have a very large Sinularia, huge Devil's Hand, and a large Toadstool. So I'll likely take 1-2 of those and put in there...most likely the Sinularia and Devil's Hand. I really like soft corals, so I will probably stick with just a couple large/showpiece soft corals and possibly some Zoas.
