Plasma light... the future?

so the replacement "bulb" is $650? Or that is the puck/heatsink etc + bulb. How much for a replacement "bulb"?

That would be for the light, heatsink and driver. I'm not sure on the price of a replacement bulb yet but I can check on that.

It depends on how long the "bulb" lasts and if it produces heat, etc. Also what's the spread and penetration? If you only need one for a 4' tank that would be something to consider.

The tanks I saw it on were around 4' square and every place in the tank was lit up. The shimmers from these are UNREAL. MH hold no candle to the shimmer effect created. They felt cooler then a 400w MH, that's for sure. Spread depends on the reflector since they emit in nearly all directions. Watch Reef Builders for future reading on this though as I've said all I can say with out killing their next story :D

the main problem with any plasma product like the use in the new plasma tv.s is the same, the heat produced is intense and you can really only leave it on for 8 hr.s before heat overload; the heat warning on it is a problem it they could figure out how to keep them cool that's one thing, but the fans and chiller would probably suck of a ton of energy, the light not so much. people have burned houses down from the heat of the plasma tvs, but the other thing is the replacement cost, yes it would be really expensive most are still not mass produced and the other is that the average plamsa bulbs in other electronics last on average 20-24 months with being on about 6-8 hours a day. replaceing would really burn a hole trough your wallet fast, but in the future maybe they'll solve thatfor us too!

Gem, a plasma display operates MUCH differently than these bulbs. Please don't confuse this technology with that of a plasma display, other than using argon and electricity, you will find that the similarities stop there.

quoted from Luxim's website:

Because there is only one LIFIâ"žÂ¢ source per fixture and because the source is more efficient at converting input power into light rather than heat, the thermal management of LIFIâ"žÂ¢ sources is straightforward.

It has been reported that these don't get very hot.

The driver for these is low voltage, high current 28VDC @ 8.9 Amps!!

The only thing that ever gets replaced is the bulb, and these have a lifespan of 30,000 hours... even if the lifespan for our aquariums was a tenth of that, you would be replacing it no more than once every year.

The real savings will be on your energy bill, as it has a 120 lumens to one Watt ratio. This is even better than LED's! The thing that scares me about the replacement cost of LED's is that you have to replace ALL of them every 5-10 years... and they are REALLY expensive because you have so many of them.

Another thing I like about the LIFI lights is that it is dimmable by a simple analog 0-10V control voltage. That makes for a very inexpensive option to dim these lights. But it can also easily be digitally controlled, which means that a reef computer like an aquacontroller can easily be programmed to control one of these lights!

So far I see nothing wrong with this technology... even the price is not that bad. If we can get that to come down a bit, and see some real tests on corals, then we'll know if this is a viable option for future reefing...

It has to warm up to get rid of the blue tint. Once warmed up I noticed very little shift. It did seem to have a little on the lower side (closer to 20%) but for the most part I didn't see much.

so when is this light coming out and where can I get when asap? I want 2 of these. they are crazy bright for such a small bulb. very nice

You can get from Pacifica to Sunnyvale in a 1/2 hour? When, midnight? :)

I live a 1/2 hour from it (Santa Cruz) and I am a heck of a lot closer then you

I dive fast and reckless. as long as there is room to move I can get myself there. Plus I live right next to highway 35. not deep into pacifica.

But what does diving fast and reckless have to do with driving :) Just jabbing yah, I'm not so light on the peddle either, or so the CHP seems to have thought on more then one occasion

FWIW I dive deep and stay long :)

let us know if you do head by though. I would but I'm really behind at work right now :(

Dang Gresh,
I missed that light at MBA by a few days:( I heard all about it though, and of course want one or ten.:)

What spectrum do these plasma bulbs put out?
