I have heard it debated, but are any plastic containers good for use as an ATO? I have a Brute, but its too big and want a little bit smaller 10-20g range, but have heard some say that even these have phosphate issues?

If so where is a good place to buy one online?

Thanks,
Ser

"Brute" Rubbermaid containers/trash cans, historically, have been the recommended type of container. Other "food grade" plastic containers can also be used.

Just yesterday, however, I read on another post on this site that some people are claiming even Brute containers supposedly can leach phosphates.

The experts on Wet Web Media also recommend Brute Rubbermaid containers.

I am now totally baffled, but will continue to use my Brute trash cans for make-up saltwater and for my ATO.

Use the Krylon spray paint for plastic(reef safe) and spray the inside of any plastic container, they won't leach anything.

Yes, I have read the same Brute is safe, then the next article, its not safe. We do know its better then regular plastic, so thats a start.

Hmmm, I would like to read on more on the spray painting method. What sort of paint is it?

Good input.

It's a special paint that bonds to plastic so that it doesn't chip or peel. It comes in alot of different colors and you can get it at most home centers. It's called Krylon Fusion.

hmmm, interesting, thank you for the info. Still want to read more on it...have any articles on it perchance?

tanks :)

I have not info on this but maybe someone else does...What about using an empty 5 gallon salt bucket. I know I mix up saltwater in them and let them sit a day or two without any problems. Not big enough maybe...

What about a 20 gallon aquarium. you can get one on craigslist for like 10-50 bucks. Elevate it on a stand, plumb in a float valve and drill a hole in the bottom for a ball valve. Put your bucket under the tank and open the valve and you got a bucket of fresh water.

Thanks guys. Good options.

The ebay one is pretty cool.

yeah, I want to get a 20 gal aquarium. I just can't find one easily where I live, and the mail would break it. Eventually I probably will try and get one.

Rubbermaid Brutes come in 10g and 20g sizes. Check Lowes, they usually have the 20g sizes in stock. You can also ordered from US Plastic. They have the 10g ones too.

The bottoms of tanks are usually tempered, the bottom of one of the sides would be better.
