Dang, I could only wish I could capture the details as well as you did with mine. I'm still learning, but you're way ahead of the curve!
What settings did you use for the super close up shots? I tried my macro doesn't seem to do all that great.
 
I did not use any one setting. I did mostly use the auto settings. In some cases when it did not focus I used manual focus. But one trick I have is that I sometimes use a magnifying glass and point the lense thru it and focus then take the picture.

But it could also be that I have only a 29 gallon tank so most everything in my tank is already close to the glass and I notice your tank is alot bigger than this so for you this is probably not the case. You may need a better lense with more zoom.
 
Animation,

To turn off the flash on your D70, you hold down the flash button just below the flash on the left side, and then turn the back dial (upper right rear of camera) until the circle slash icon appears in your display.
