Hi, I've got a 14g BC with 14lbs LR, frogspawn and hammer head corals, a clown fish and a CUC of snails and scarlet hermit crabs. Tank is about 6 weeks old. I'm trying to talk myself into adding a store raised mandarin that will accept food since I can't possibly stock my tank with enough copods. Any hope? If not, how would another clown play together with the first? Right now its a small one and only been in the tank for a couple weeks. Can I match the run of the mill clown I have now with a black clown? Will they play along? Suggestions for another fish I could keep? Thank you!!!

Pretty new, live about a 100 yards from an LFS so I finally took the plunge into salt water. Had grown up with and done many a fresh water and felt ready for the new challenge. Lovin' it so far....So...

Q: Longnose hawkfish too aggressive for a small reef tank (with no coral yet, down the road)?

29 G Biocube, 25lbs live rock.

2 Occ clowns
1 Algae eating blennie
1 emerald crab
2 scarlet hermits
2 dwarf red hermits
1 electric blue hermit
2 astria snails
2 margarita snails
1 mexican turbo
1 small black turbo
3 nassarius
2 scarlet skunk cleaner shrimp

Unfortunately a mandarin will have no chance even if it is eating prepared food (in that sized tank). A second clown of the same species and small should mature into a pair. Your tank is semi-marginal for a pair of clowns but you should be ok.

A long nosed hawkfish is a fascinating fish with lots of personality. However, as an ambush predator, your shrimp will be at risk. A red flame hawkfish: similar personality, same risk with shrimp.

Curiosity question, Snorvich.

I often see you recommend carberryi and resplendent anthias and was just curious as to why, personal preference, coloration, disposition?

As always, thanks for the help and insight.

Well, it is personal preference because I love their personality and interaction as well as their coloration. Some other species tend to convert to all males and that can be a bit problematical.

Well you only get one pair of clowns in your sized tank. They simply will not tolerate a second pair. I don't know what a blackened wrasse is, do you have a scientific name? Also, your predators will eat your other fish if they fit in their mouth. A regal angel is a difficult fish so be sure you see it eating.

I have a 60 gallon tank i have had setup for a few months. I will tell you what i have already and what i intend on buying. A good bit of live rock.. probably atleast 50lbs currently. I have a very nice octopus hangon skimmer that is probably able to support 150 gallon tank at least. I have a charcoal hangon filter. 2 Clowns, 3 damsels, 3 anemones, bubble tip, condi and some other i have yet to identify that came with some rock. I have about 5 pieces of soft coral. Nothing to large, just your average 15 dollar piece. 2 turbo snails, 30 snails with tons of babies, and about 20ish hermits. Oh i have two peppermint shrimp as well.

I want to get a ton more soft corals and maybe 1 or 2 more fish. Mostly i want to get softies. Should i be ok you think?:hammer:

I am not a big fan of damsel fish because they get aggressive towards their tank mates. I don't know if your tank can sustain those anemones long term, it depends on lighting flow. However this thread, by design and title, is about fish not anemones or corals so cannot really help you there.

To get off topic a bit. Am i getting into trouble with having these anemones? I have a t5 light that is pretty good. No MH. Any reading i can go to and read up some that you would recommend?

Also the Damsels seem ok. They were my starter fish in another tank. If i kept just one of them do you think they would still be agressive?

I would post that question (about anemones) in that forum where you will get a whole lot of expert attention. I strongly suggest not using "starter fish" as it is bad for the fish and results in a problem later on. Damsels (including clownfish which are damsels) can be very aggressive. It is always easier to prevent problems in lieu of trying to fix them later.
