I was wondering if a pair of Zebra Barred Dartfish (bar goby) would get along with a pair of firefish in a 29 gallon aquarium along with a pajama cardinal.

What are your thoughts ?

First, your firefish would need to be a bonded pair or you would end up with just one. I am reluctant to bless this combination in such a small tank. Sorry

Thanks. I had read that firefish do ok in pairs. I'll reconsider.

they do fine if the pairs are bonded. Otherwise, in the long term, it is not a viable situation. You will always see a group at the LFS in a 40 gallon breeder but this will not be viable once territories have been established.

would a blue hippo tank do ok in a 54 gal corner tank?
getting tank set up soon
tanks 38x27x22
i'd get baby maybe be 2" long
how fast do they grow
if not what be good in tank with 2 maroon clowns coral beauty and a scooter blenny
and need help with clen up crew for tank
it will be reef tank with what ever i can grow in it lol
and coral beauty hasnt nip at any corals while she in small tank trying get out in bigger tank soon but there health in there can't wait to get there new home rdy for them

Hello, been looking at Live Aquaria for hrs trying to narrow down the list of fish that I'd like to get that I thought would work with one another.

I don't have anything yet, but this list. I plan on getting a 5ft long tank (100'ish gallons) with 20gal sump/fuge and skimmer.

I'm thinking a minimalist reef tank with a fair amount swimming room would be best for the species I have picked.

Here goes...

Fish
- Powder Brown Tang
- Chevron Tang (I've heard conflicting reports about this one regarding min tank size)
- Yellow Pyramid Butterfly
- Red Mandarin (It'll be one of my latter additions so pods will be available)
- Ocellaris Clown
- Royal Gramma Basslet
- Yellow Prawn Goby

Inverts
- Candy Cane Pistol Shrimp
- 2 Skunk Cleaner Shrimp
- Bubble Tip Anemone
- Assorted Snails (haven't picked these out yet)
- Assorted Corals (haven't picked these out yet)

Thanks.

Unfortunately no. RC recommends a tank size for this fish of 240 gallons. they grow quickly and reach a size in excess of a foot. As they grow, cramped quarters makes them increasingly aggressive.

Maroon clowns are hyper aggressive. You will do well to have those inhabitants be compatible.

Coral Beauty fish are not reef safe unfortunately.

Fish
- Powder Brown Tang this is the only one that might be problematical, the rest should be fine.
- Chevron Tang (I've heard conflicting reports about this one regarding min tank size) One of my favorite tangs
- Yellow Pyramid Butterfly May eventually make your tank look a bit small as they will grow
- Red Mandarin (It'll be one of my latter additions so pods will be available)
- Ocellaris Clown
- Royal Gramma Basslet
- Yellow Prawn Goby

Inverts

Thanks.

You are most welcome

Any idea on a substitute for the powder brown? I'm wanting something with some size and nice coloration, or is no replacement best as it might make it a little too cramped?

In my opinion, I feel it would make it appear too cramped. From many many years of doing this, I think that cramped makes for bad times both visually and for fish interaction/stress.

Hello all I am currently looking to put a matted filefish in my 80 gallon tank to get rid of aptasia that has started to show up. I have an 80g dt with a 15g sump (I am currently planning a sump refugium to increase the amount and get all the added benefits) I'm running a corallife super skimmer and filter sock. Water parameters are ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate 20ppm (I have decreased this quite a bit since being given the tank) ca 460ppm, kh 11 dkh 196.9 ppm, phos 2.0, and ph 8.2. I currently have 2 clown (1 false 1 black) 1 blue hippo tang, 1 sailfin tang, 1 coral beauty, 1 yellow clown gobi, 2 shrimp and a handful of snails. Corals are multiple mushrooms, close to 150 zoos, a bunch of torches, a large RBTA (close to 10 inches when fully opened) and a carnation coral (stupid I know) and a couple cabbage leather corals of different sizes.

My question is will the filefish eat my RBTA? or the carnation? I know the carnation requires a ton of time and dedication but it seems to be doing very well In my tank so I don't want to introduce something that's just going to eat it. Thanks for your help

ok, here goes.
The system I have and that will first cycle a few months supported by heavy bacteria addition:
35g cube with 10g sump w/ lr fuge
Oversized skimmer
2*Tunze 6055 with multicontroller
80w led
45 lbs LR and 40 lbs LS

The plan is a nice mix of SPS/softie/LPS

I originall planned to let a sand sifting sea star take care of my sandbed, but they get so big (how fast do they grow under my conditions, assuming I get a 2-3" one) that I am a bit concerned of it growing beyond proportions.

Fishies as planned:
Stonogobiops Nematodes x 2 + 1 Alpheus Randalli
Tailspot Blenny x 1
Starry Blenny x 1 (have read here that the starry and the tailspot may tolaerate each other?)
Wetmorella x1
Apogon Leptacanthus x 3 or Starkii Damsel x 1 (I have scratched the Dwarf Angel, reasons have been discussed at length in this thread)
with option of adding Spotted Mandarin after 6-9 months if I am convinced the live substrate may produce enough copepods - not sure though whether the Wetmorella competes for them?

too much bioload?

Appreciate your evaluation!

The filefish is unlikely to eat your carnation coral, but then again, keeping it alive will be a problem for reasons you already know. It is very possible it will go after you RBTA. You did not ask about your tangs, but they will be a problem down the line.

Sand sifting stars will deplete the beneficial organisms in your live sand and then starve to death.

Stonogobiops Nematodes x 2 + 1 Alpheus Randalli
Tailspot Blenny x 1
Starry Blenny x 1 (have read here that the starry and the tailspot may tolaerate each other?)

although I have not kept these two fish in the same tank, they may not tolerate each other, especially in a small tank

Wetmorella x1
Apogon Leptacanthus x 3 or Starkii Damsel x 1 (I have scratched the Dwarf Angel, reasons have been discussed at length in this thread)

Yes, there would be competition for copepods but even if there were not, your tank is on the small side even with a producing refugium. But generally I like your fish selection but would not do the damsel

too much bioload? Well, it is approaching too much for sure

Appreciate your evaluation!

Thanks for the advice. The gangs came with the tank when it was given to me. What type of problems might I have with them.

Well, you might look at our recommendation for tank sizes for tangs located here. The problem is that tangs (actually other fish too) get more aggressive as they get larger and are kept in smallish environments. Can you picture a one foot fish in your tank?

Updated my list and tank

Updated my list and tank

I'm thinking of a 6ft (125g) tank now instead of the 5ft (100'ish gal) one I was thinking about yesterday. With that I'm ditching the powder brown tang, replacing it with a Zoster Butterfly.

Would this work?

Oh, and I forgot... would I be able to get a pair of clowns if they hosted an anemone?
