Please Don"t Tell Me I Just Damaged My Clamn Enough To Kill It!!!

AHH CRAP!!

was cleaning up some algae in my tank and i picked some up....picked up the clam with it and i didn't think of it...not a biggie...but i guess the clamn shell it is attached to and sitting on was broke in 1/2 and 1/2 of it stayed in teh sand!!!!!

so i noticed 1/2 of its threads and its byssal gland were exposed now. it looks like 1/2 of the threads ripped but i am NOT sure.

so now what the heck do i do? i placed it back where it was and placed it back on the 1/2 shell.

so will it die????? what should i do? what should i look for???

i am VERY VERY distrought and saddened at the moment...i really don't want to loose this clam...i have had it for about 1 year.

Was the 1/2 of the shell that stayed on the sand caught on something?

If the clam were firmly attached to it, I would think it would lift up when you lifted the clam. If the 1/2 shell was caught on something, and you pulled with some force, then I would think it would damage the clam.

But if it wasn't caught, and didn't lift with the clam, I doubt there was enough force to cause damage. It wouldn't have been firmly attached anyway.

I have been relatively rough with my crocea. It was attached to 2 rocks and I possibly ripped a couple threads in trying to move it. I don't think it harmed the clam.

Also consider - the clams that are damaged are the ones that are yanked from the rocks they are firmly attached to. And even those can survive (I think).

Just feed it extra phyto so it has the energy and nutrients to heal if it is damaged.

hmm, not sure if it was attached or not. i guess it was 1/2 burried in the sand and it DIDN"T lift up that i could tell or recall...so maybe it wasn't attached to it.

there wasn't much force on it...so that is what baffled me.

what would ripped threads and a byssal look like? the threads looked nice and pink...LOTS of them ...pretty much hairy...at least i think that was the threads and the gland was nice and white...no sign of damage that i could recall. there was sand inside the 1/2 of the shell that wasn't attached so maybe it didn't attach to it.

the clam was open about 3/4 of the way normal when i left (15min after the happening) looked ok. i will check it when i get ot my apt this evening....only can hope it didn't damage my baby

i don't feed phyto. the tank gets cyclopeze daily

I guess best thing to do is just baby it as much as possible and hope it recovers. A little extra phyto, like sloth said, might help.

hmm, seems to look PERFECT!!!! is open all the way and doesn't seem like a thing happend!!

wonder if it wasn't attached...wonder if it was just on the sand.
